Windows no longer connects to My Cloud device – is it broken?

Hello,

For about 15 months my My Cloud device has been working fine as a NAS drive for my Desktop PC using Windows7 Professional and has been very useful.

This morning when I powered up my Computer an error message told me that it was unable to connect to a network drive (my WDMyCloud). I tried rebooting the PC several times and this made no difference. I eventually thought that it might work if I selected “Disconnect Network drive” and then selected “Map Network Drive” to see if it was found or discoverable.

Windows allowed me to “Disconnect Network drive” and I did a 4 second reset of the My Cloud device. I rebooted my PC but Windows could not see the My Cloud device. I repeated this several times all to no avail. If I unplug my Network cable from my router the power light on the My Cloud turns solid red so something must be working.

I suspect that my device might be broken but can anyone please advise me as to how I can get MyCloud device to be discovered by Windows again so that I can access my files?

TIA.

Try downloading the wakeonlan program from this site.

Then have it do a scan of your network. See if the IP
address of your My Cloud has changed.

Hello, many thanks for your suggestion.

I followed the link and downloaded the Zip file. When I ran the file it did a network scan but did not find my My Cloud device.

What devices did it find? If you know the previous IP address of your My Cloud.
You could try to ping that IP address. The fact that the red light goes away when
you plug in the cable. Indicates that the router is giving the My Cloud an IP address.
You should be able to ping that address.

Hi,
I have several cameras and smart switches etc and it found all of them. I have pinged them all and found no problems. There is no sign at all of a My Cloud device.

I also tried pinging the previous IP address of My Cloud device but it said something along the lines of Destination host unreachable.

Login to your router and see what it thinks is on the network.

It also sees the same as the Scan did. No sign of MY Cloud device either. Unfortunately not every device has a name shown and I can not recall what they are.

Use the mac address to check for the My Cloud. The mac address is
on the bottom of the My Cloud.

Hello, thanks again for your help, I couldn’t respond sooner because the power was off due to storms.

I again logged into the router and checked the connected devices. There was no device with the MAC address that is on the base of My Cloud device. I also checked again using the WakeOnLan programme and it is not shown there either.

Hold the front page!!!

After posting my earlier reply to you I had a rethink. I have always been using my My Cloud device via a TP-Link Port switch and have never had any doubts. However, I took a punt and unplugged the device from the port switch and instead, plugged it directly into the Router.

I then ran the Router check and it found MyCloud device instantly. The wake on lan programme found it too.

I then “mapped the network drive” and hey presto Bob’s your Aunt!

I am grateful to you for your help and advice. Thanks a million.

Cheers
