Windows Media Player cannot see my WDMyCloud

Hi,
Sorry if this is a real newbie question, but I am stumped.  I have just purchased a shiney new 4Gb WDMyCloud, and have loaded approx 1200 FLAC and MP3 files onto it.  I have Media streaming set to ‘ON’ and I can stream music from it onto my PC running WIndows 7 and Windows Media Player.

However, on my laptop, running WIndows 8.1, I cannot see my WDMyCloud in the ‘other libraries’ section of the Windows Media Player.  My WDMyCloud can see my laptop (via the Dashboard Settings|Media|View Media Players option) but WMP cannot (or will not) see the WDMyCloud.

I believe the reason WMP on my laptop cannot see my WDMyCloud in the ‘other libraries’ section is because I clicked the option ‘Remove from List’, assuming that it would be easy to add it back on again.  This has not been the case.

Can anyone be of assistance?

I am able to play all of the files via windows explorer, VLC etc

Thanks in advance,

Roger

Hello,

Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings, and make sure that Network discovery and Media streaming are turned ON

Hi Hamlet,

thanks for your response.

I have Network Discovery and Media Streaming turned on.

In Windows Explorer I can see the WDMyCloud listed as a Computer, a Media Device and a Storage Device.

If I go into Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Media streaming options and look at the devices on my local network, the WDMyCloud doesn’t appear, nor does it appear under ‘other libraries’ in WMP.

It used to appear under ‘other libraries’ until I took the option to ‘remove from list’  If I knew what this list was, and where I could find it, then I am sure it would be a simple matter to reinstate WDMyCloud.

I appreciate that this is a Microsoft Windows problem, rather than a WD problem, but I would like to be able to view and play media held on my WDMyCloud in WMP on my laptop.

Give up. Smartware is horrible. I’ve seen dried worms in my driveway move faster.

What does not using Smartware have to do with Windows Media Player which is the subject of this 10 month old thread?

Sorry This is splatter from a broad spectrum rage pulse generally directed at WD initiated by my frustration with their MyCloud product.

Hi, How long have you had your MyCloud? When I first got mine I expected the earth from it and promptly copied around 300 Gb of mp3 files onto it. It became completely useless for about a week while it sorted out all its indexes etc. I’ve had it almost a year since then, and it has worked flawlessly.

It has now got 590 Gb of music on it, as well as backups from a collection of macbooks, laptops and mobile phones. It just sits in the spare bedroom unattended and I let it do it’s thing.

I’ve just checked Windows Media Player on my laptop, and my WDMyCloud is again visible as an ‘Other library’. I have absolutely no idea when or how this happened!

So, my advice, for what it’s worth, is be patient!

I love the hardware - it’s fast and works great. I wanted a backup system and Smartware was lousy. Waiting for the dashboard to come up drove me insane. I’ve gone to a third party (SyncBackSe) and all my problems are gone.

Right click an item in the list, click customise navigation pane, select other libraries from drop down menu, My Cloud will show in there just tick the box and click ok

Many thanks David.

All working OK now

For me, it was my VPN that was blocking the recognition of the WD NAS Drive. I turned off the VPN and voila! everything worked.
