I recently purchased an EX4 and SmartWare software. Everything installed easy enough. PC is Windows 7 and the EX4 is attached to a router. Access to the EX4 is via wifi from the Windows 7 PC. Using SmartWare 2.4.10 it was easy enough to start a backup but then after a few minutes it stopped. A large number of files could not be backed up and now it’s no longer trying. I see a message that says “Partial backup accomplished. Remaining files will be added later”. I tried rebooting everything but SmartWare would not continue. I uninstalled and re-installed SmartWare. It then started over and stopped again. Backed up 42G out of 455G. Was unable to backup ~53G. As an example of what couldn’t be copied, numerous .mov files in the pictures directory were not backed up (many .mov files were backed up so it’s not a class effect). Any help would be appreciated.

Are the files in use when WD SmartWare stops? Does this happen even if you switch the backup engine from category backup to file backup mode?
Files are definitely not in use. For example, mulitple .mov files in the pictures directory were not backed up. Severeal .rar files. .pptx files. .jpg. Switching to file mode and re-enabling backups nothing happened. Nothing was backed up. Didn’t wait forever.
Sw running all night and day, has now backed up ~50G out of ~458G and not backed up 58G. To put into perspective, was able to back up ~30G in the first 15 minutes yesterday.
Interestingly, the dashboard shows CPU utilization on the EX4 to be 100%, basically all of it one of the smbd processes.
Just as a reminder, rebooting the PC and EX4 yesterday didn’t change anything. Re-installing the Smartware software caused the back up to start over with it still petering out after backing up 35 or 40G out of ~458G
Thanks for the help
PS nothing has been backed up in the time it took to write this. CPU utilization on the EX4 still 100%
Update: I called WD technical support and was advised to uninstall SmartWare, repair Microsoft Net latest version (4.5. something), reboot the PC, re-install SmartWare and connect the EX4 directly to the PC via ethernet cable. I did this and upon restarting the backup, again it quickly backed up ~30G, did not back up ~48G, all out of 459G. The backup has since slowed to a “crawl”. Has backed up a few files in the time I have written all this.
Nothing really changed per WD support suggestions. Interestingly, when I first called it was suggested that I switch to some other back up solution. I of course asked why then did I acquire SmartWare? No answer was provided and WD technical support abandoned the idea of abandoning SmartWare.
Does this mean SmartWare is known to be awful and I am wasting my time?
Update: SmartWare has been running continuously since my last update. So far 94K files / 247G out of 194K files / 459G have been backed up. EX4 directly connected to the PC via ethernet. 1100 files / 156G are marked as not backed up. Has been running ~5 days (I’ve lost track) and still very slow. Not sure why I am letting it continue, guess I want to see what happens when we reach the end. Will it go back and back up the files it skipped? Will it back up new files that I create after the initial back up is complete?
Needless to say, it’s obvious SmartWare is not very good software. I had assumed (wrongly it appears) that a major player like WD would know how to write software. Maybe they just know hardware
