WD My Cloud - Access Denied for SSH - Firmware 2.30.165

Hello,

I have a WD My Cloud I bought in November of 2016; one of the newer models that have a CPU on board and will give you a status report if you go into the Web UI. Firmware is 2.30.165.

I have activated SSH and a dialog comes up asking me to enter a username/password. It had never been turned on previously. I entered the password and tried to log into PuTTY and could not connect. It is telling me Access is Denied regardless of what I change the password to.

I’ve tried “admin” and “ssdh” as the usernames.

Root does not work either. The “welc0me” password is denied.

I’ve also tried the paperclip reset, but this didn’t help either.

I’ve tried searching low and high, but no thread with this question never gets resolved. Some help would be appreciated.

What OS and app/program/software on that OS are you using to log in and what is the specific command you are issuing to access the My Cloud? Issuing a wrongly formed SSH login command can yield an access denied message.

It appears that on the v2.x single bay My Cloud units you create your own password from within the My Cloud Dashboard, See the following WD Support document for v2.x single bay My Clouds:

Note step 4:

When SSH is turned ON a pop-up window will display to accept the terms for using SSH. After checking the I accept checkbox the SSH username will be provided, as well as an option to type in a desired password. The username is sshd and it is case sensitive. Type in the desired password and confirm it immediately below. Click OK when ready.

Users of the older first gen v4.x firmware single bay My Clouds they can see the following WD Support document link:

I’m using WIndows 10 64-bit, and using PuTTY to access SSH.

For some reason, its working now. I did exactly what you stated the last time too, but it wasn’t working. Weird.

Thanks. I’ll let you know if it happens again.
