Same here. Even worse, backups (which were working at least once a day after they rolled out 8.2) are not working anymore for a few days now.

Wow terrible customer service!.. Im still waiting to be refunded for the return of the useless Mycloudhome device I sent back… Anyone any ideas what they’re going to use for TM now?.. Fear im running out of time seeings as they are ending support on the My cloud in april.

Hi, I would like to know also about any thoughts of what people are looking at to backup Time Machine… Since WD has no interest in find a solution to this problem…

While working with an Apple TM Engineer on this problem, he gave up, and said they did not support WD. I reminded him that Apple no longer makes Time Capsules, which I really liked, and asked what Apple does recommend. He did not have an answer to that question!

Well that was incredibly helpful of them… Im at a loss at to what device to use now for my TM, looks like I may have to buy a simple Portable HDD or SSD for now… Thanks for the update @Dawndang

WD just offered to exchange my old unit for a brand new one, but given @KG12345 's issue with a brand new one, I’m going to pass on that. If I have to start all over again, I’m going to purchase something that is know to work.

Had an email exchange with WD support. They escalated this issue to engineering for further review, analysis and issue duplication. Still no solution in sight.

Same. Given that they are unable to duplicate the problem, have installations that are working with various different firmware, and mine does not work with the new firmware, they are thinking that possibly certain individual MyCloud devices have an issue with 7.16 or later. This is just a theory, and not fully explored yet – the engineers are still working on it. They offered to exchange my device, however, if I’m starting from scratch, I will just start with different hardware, so I turned that down.

Hello:

I don’t know how I did it, but TimeMachine is now working for me on my My Cloud Home.

First of all, I deleted the drive in TimeMachine.
Then I mapped the disk following the instructions in https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24148#subject1.
I removed MyMac.sparsebundle. This took me quite a while until it was totally eliminated. I reinstalled the unit in Time Machine.

From here, it already works correctly for me.

I hope this can help you.

Best regards.

Hola:

No se bien cómo lo hice, pero ya me funciona TimeMachine en mi My Cloud Home.

En primer lugar, eliminé la unidad en TimeMachine.

Después mapeé el disco siguiendo las instrucciones de How to Map a Network Drive on macOS for My Cloud & My Cloud Home.
Eliminé MyMac.sparsebundle. Esto me llevo bastante rato hasta que se eliminó totalmente.
Volví a instalar la unidad en Time Machine. A partir de aquí, ya me funciona correctamente.

Espero que esto pueda ayudaros.

Saludos.

Already tried mapping as well, no help.

I do not want to delete my existing backups since from time to time (every 2 or 3 days) Time Machine seems to be working. So there must be a solution. Therefore I still hope WD will find it.

WD again reached out to me so they seem to be working on it.

Mine still does not work at all. Just sent another log to wd. I think they are getting closer.

Go around all the forums of the different brands of NAS and you will find the same threads in all of them. They all go something like this and most of them blame the NAS, but that is probably because owners lack the knowledge about all the similar problems in the other NAS and Time Machine.

This has been a recurring problem for us for some time. Not sure if it’s caused mostly by Apple or Synology though seems the latter as time machine works reliably with a wide variety of non-Synology DAS and NAS devices. I’m not enamored with the idea of having to maintain a separete non-Synology system just for time machine though.

This thread leaves me wondering if Time Machine on Synology is basically abandoned by Apple and Synology. Is it time to find another solution? Seems like a clear explanation of where things stand, where things are likely to go and some suggested options could be really useful. It might even make sense for a notification to be sent out to warn folks that Time Machine is going to fail for you if it has not already. I have a couple macs running a little older OS that things are working fine for and I have one running the current (11.6) that is failing to back up.

A proper error message from Apple is at least a useful first acknowledgement but it doesn’t explain why some Macs on the same LAN don’t show the same error using TM with the identical NAS.

I have a Synology DS412+ which I have been using for years as a Time Machine server for all my Apple computers. Very recently backups stopped working on two of my MacBooks. Every time they try to do a backup, the message “The network backup disk does not support the required capabilities” is shown.
This started happening approximately at the time I upgraded to macOS Monterey 12.3, but other Macs that I have also upgraded do not have the issue.

I have a DS920+ with the identical issue where just my 15" MacBook Pro (Monterey 12.3) reports, “The selected network backup disk does not support the required capabilities” for Time Machine, whereas my other Macs do not.

Of course. It is purely a coincidence that for a large group of us Time Machine just stopped working on our WD device during the same week, and another coincidence that a firmware upgrade occurred on the WD device that very same week. We are all just dummies! (sarcasm)

hmmm…newest MacOS update , deleted everything via MyCloudHome website than added as backupdrive…and it is working!! at least started to save a new backup!!! trustlevel still low but looking forward;-)

potentially promising…keep us updated as to if it continues… i am still awaiting the refund for my failed device i sent back!..I have looked into other NAS providers and does seem little coincidental that users are also experiencing the same issues… I’m now looking at using a LaCie to use as TM backups and then looking into using carbon copy cloner, anyone have any experience with using this? Thanks

it all looks pretty promising and “normal” again…thumbs up!

still working! all good for me
even not knowing why…but hey what do i know?!

So I tried to delete the sparsebundle (have completely given up on ever accessing pre January backups), waited a day, but it does not delete completely. Ran the backup again, and rather than dying with no message, I actually got an error message:

Cannot access sparsebundle (error 2)

Rebooted WD and Mac, but still the same error. My theory is that when the WD firmware upgrade happened, it somehow corrupted the sparsebundle file, which not cannot be deleted, nor accessed.

Is there a way to delete the sparsebundle file, without resetting the entire WD device?

I am having the same problem since Jauary.
