I have had one for years but used it mainly as a USB connected drive. Now I have a need to take it on a photo shoot and I want to download every day’s shots from the SD card into the drive. The problem seem to be that I no longer have the quick install guide to see the 9 digit code AAA_BBB_CCC that the My Cloud Home app asks for. Is this app compatible with my drive (model E6B)? How can I get the app connected to the drive?
The app asks me if it is connected to power, plugged in to my home network, is the light on? My Wireless Pro has a battery that is fully charged, uses wireless not wired networking and has a bunch of lights. Doesn’t seem like we’re talking about the same device!
I can connect wirelessly from my laptop and by USB from my laptop, but it feels like I don’t have the right app for Android to connect wirelessly.
It seems like you’re trying to use a different My Cloud model, which could explain the confusion between the app and your device’s connection method.
The My Cloud Home app typically requires a specific 9-digit code but if you’re using a Wireless Pro with USB and wireless capabilities, you might need the My Cloud or My Cloud Pro app instead, which has different setup steps and network configurations so checking the model-specific guide could clear things up.
I located an Android APK installation file for My Cloud Pro on CNet. It is not longer supported or provided by WD. It runs fine on my phone. The link is provided here (hope that’s allowed!):
I don’t yet have it connecting to my Passport device, something’s messed up, I get a Network Connection Failure (904) that I have not yet resolved. But I’m on he way …
The network error was (I think) caused by the VPN on my phone (SurfShark). Now it seems that the Android app is able to detect the My Passport Wireless device.
I unplug the Passport and wait for the wireless light to come on - OK.
I switch my phone to the wireless network generated by the Passport - OK.
I turn off the VPN in my phone - OK.
I start the Android app, tell it I am looking for a Passport Wireless and it starts searching for it and the spinning wheels turn.
Eventually it times out or something and says “User does not have permission, error code 403”.
Any idea what to do about that?
FIRST - - - forget about “apps”. There used to be one. . .long since defunct since WD depricated OS/3.
Second - - you are on the right track logging onto the network the WDWP sets up. . . .
Third - - - -switch your PC wifi network to the one the WDWP establishes. THEN you need to log into the device by navigating a web browser to the device home page. I believe it is 192.168.60.1 by default. Once there. . . .it will likely ask you to do setup stuff like establish passwords and whatnot.
Thanks, all good advice, and pretty much what I have done. The remaining problem is “User does not have permission, error code 403” and I don’t know how to resolve that.
(Note that implies a security key in step 5 - - → That may be the 9 digit code you don’t have. I don’t remember. . .been a decade since I set one up. If you get hung up here. . .I would contact WD support and pray.)
Gave up on the Windows app and the Android app. I can browse to 192.168.60.1 to do admin things - make sure to enable FTP access.
To see the files on the drive I’m using an Android FTP app to that same IP, port 21, no security (ie not SSL/TLS), anonymous sign-in (tried admin and the last 8 characters of the serial # but doesn’t seem to be needed), passive mode and … it works.
Interestingly the IP support on the Passport seems to only handle one connection at a time. When I try to connect another device onto the same wireless hot spot, the other one gets kicked off by the new one … I think.
