Save and Open Files Directly to EX4 - Local or Remote (Mac)

I’m in the process of setting up my new EX4, and I’m having some trouble understaning some of the basics around how this thing works.

Essentially, I want to be able to Open and Save files directly to the EX4, regardless of whether I’m on the same network or remote. As of now, I can successfully access files remotely via the WD My Cloud app, but that doesn’t allow me to Open/Save files directly from an application. Am I missing something here? Do I need to somehow mount the drive in addition to connecting to it via WD My Cloud? Via WebDav or something else?

When on the local network, WD QuickView allows me to mount the drive, but it doesn’t work when remote.

Any suggestions?

Setup cloud access in the dashboard for your user account, then access via wd2go.com  This will mount the shared folder to your computer.

Thanks for your quick reply. I believe we have everything setup correctly, but here’s what happens.

We go to wd2go.com, login, and choose my WD device. After that, it just redirects my browser to a My Cloud EX4 “Get Apps” page:

https://www.wd2go.com/jsp/webdav.jsp?deviceType=WD_MY_CLOUD_EX4

It’s doing that because you’ll want the My Cloud app for Mac so you can access it remotely.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

Tony - I already have the My Cloud app installed, and that works well. However, it doesn’t allow me to Open/Save documents directly from applications on my desktop, and it doesn’t (at least from what I can tell) mount the drive in my finder.

I feel like I must be missing something obvious?

No, you’re not missing anything.   I guess they decided not to include EX4 support with the My Cloud (wd2go) webservice.  Hmmm.

This is not available on the EX4 (mounting the file system from Mycloud.com). We will eventually have another solution for that.

You can also access your files remotely through the Dashboard. Go to the apps section and click on the web files viewer there. You can get to all your files that way.

Tony

Thanks Tony,

Good to hear there will be a solution coming soon - can you elaborate on what that is?

In the meantime, should I just use WebDav? And if so, are there any instructions as to the best way to do this? What settings to toggle on, which ports to open on my router, etc.?

Thanks,

j

Sorry - can’t elaborate yet.

The manual has instructions on how to use WebDav. Read through that and see if it makes sense.

The WebDav instructions are pretty sparse. I’ve enabled WebDav in the Network settings. I’ve then unsuccessfully attempted to mount the disk (both internally on our network and externally) from the following address:

http://192.168.xx.xxx:8080/Public

What am I missing?

I’m guessing you’ll need https://xxxx not http://

The documentation specifies http, although I’ve tried both http and https with the same results.

I just tried this and it works fine on an internal network. I used a Mac. I chose under Finder : Connect to server.

I entered the address as stated in the manual, and was able to connect with no issues.

Now if you want to connect externally, you will have to make sure ports are forwarded outside of your network (port 8080).

Right, well that’s the problem. I’m doing the same steps and it’s NOT working for me. The device is plugged directly into my router. I can access the web based interface fine. I’ve enabled both FTP and WebDav, and neither are working - whether I try via Finder or Transmit. I’m guessing there has to be some other setting that needs to be enabled on the EX4, but I don’t see anything referenced in the manual. This is getting frustrating, because everything appears to be setup correctly.

So you have enabled the service (via the network settings, and turned it on for the Share (for example, under shares - Public, you would have to enable WebDAV and FTP)?

Hmmm.  It’s working fine for me on my Linux and Windows OSes, at least…

So you’ve ENABLED WebDAV in both the Network Settings and Share settings and still can’t connect?

EDIT:  Ooops!     Tony Posted just as I finished testing.  :)

I’m confused.

Does this thread mean that the EX4 can’t be directly accessed by a Mac within the local network???

At this stage I don’t care about accessing the EX4 when away from our house. I only need it within our local ethernet/wi-fi network.

I need to open files directly from any application on my Mac as if it’s a hard disk on my Mac. Do I have to copy the file from the EX4 to my Mac before I can open it? Unless it’s 100% seamless, the other members of my family will never cope.

Is there another NAS that works more seamlessly with Macs (apart from the Apple AirPort Time Capsule, which doesn’t have enough features)?

Of course this works with the Mac! I am working at home right now on my Mac accessing it. It will show up as a shared device within the Finder window. You can also setup Time machine backups to the My Cloud EX4.

A quick update to this thread.

Good News: I was finally able to get remote access working with WebDav and AFP.

Bad News: Access via both protocols is VERY slow, unstable and buggy. I’m consistently seeing write errors, and having all kinds of trouble when trying to open files while connected remotely.

This has been an incredibly frustrating process - Tony, you mentioned that you’re working on a solution for remote access. Is there any way you can PM me with more details about this solution? If not, then I’m boxing this thing up and sending it back to Amazon.

I’ve the same problem to access to webdav, how did you make it works ?

In with a mac too…
