Remote Access Issue (Very Strange)

Here’s a strange one. I can access my MyCloud device locally. And, I can access mycloud.com (from CA) and see my files. But, I can’t access either from my Dad’s house in MN. When I try to log into mycloud.com at his house, I get an error page saying that I can’t connect to my MyCloud device. When I try using the app, I get a 905 error. But, the cloud is obviously online because I can connect to mycloud.com from my house. This occurs on multiple devices.

This problem is intermittent. Further, if I reboot my MyCloud device, the problem in Minnesota is fixed, at least for a while. I don’t understand why rebooting my device would fix a problem specific to a geographic area.

So, there is something wrong with the way the Internet (purposely using a vague term here) works at my Dad’s house. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or at least in some direction. I haven’t a clue where to look next.

It sounds very much like that is the problem. Your dad’s router is probably blocking the required data traffic.

You’d think so. But why would rebooting my cloud device make any difference?

Ah. I missed that nugget…

Next time, when access fails at your dad’s house, try using mobile data instead of WiFi, and see if the connection is still faulty.

Is your cloud access by port forwarding or relay mode connection?

Ah. You can connect to your MyCloud at home, because you are accessing local to your network, not via the internet. Your device isn’t necessarily ‘online’.

If your connection at home is flaky, your router may reboot, and be given a new IP address. In port forwarding mode, the MyCloud cannot recover from this, and, despite saying cloud access is okay, it isn’t. An undocumented feature. You need to toggle Cloud Access off/on to re-establish the connection. Relay mode does recover, but all dara will have to go via WD connectivity servers to do that.

Well, yeah. But I can access everything from my house so it’s highly likely NOT to be a problem with the access between WD and my device. Since I can access it from one location, I’d say that cloud access IS OK. I’ve set up manual forwarding and am going to give that a try to see if it helps.

Agreed, but I wasn’t suggesting that. By ‘online’, I thought you meant ‘available via the internet’, as opposed to simply being up and running.

As I said; one minute cloud access can be fine. But if your router resets and is given a new IP address by your ISP, cloud access will not be possible until you toggle the Cloud Access setting…
