Question about HDD standby mode

Hi! Sometimes, I experience problems connecting to our My Cloud NAS from over the Internet. When I gain physical access to the drive, I notice the blue light is pulsing, which means the NAS is in “HDD Standby Mode”. If I access the drive from the LAN, the drive “wakes up” and I can access it both from the LAN and over the Internet.

Most of the discussion here about standby mode involves the NAS not going into standby mode. What I want is to prevent the NAS from going into standby mode because I think that’s sometimes preventing remote access to the device from the Internet.

With the pandemic, we’re not spending much time in the office so there isn’t much LAN activity to keep the drive awake.

Any ideas on how to disable standby mode? I thought I had done this in the web interface of the NAS, but I forget (I’ll be sure to check this when I’m in the office again).

Thanks in advance!

Peace…

What specific My Cloud model do you have?

On the single bay/single drive My Cloud (the general subject of the My Cloud subforum) the feature/option is called “Drive Sleep” not “HDD Standby Mode”. One configures the option through the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings > General > Energy Saver section:.

See the User Manual for your My Cloud device (http://support.wdc.com/index.aspx?lang=en) for more information about this feature/option. Or see the My Cloud Dashboard embedded Help for additional information.

How to access the Dashboard on a My Cloud (single bay) device

If you do not have a single bay/single drive My Cloud device, you can find the appropriate subforum for your device here:

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I have the white single drive/single bay model. I took a screenshot of the main “Settings” page, so I would have access to serial number, and the “Drive Sleep” setting you mention is shown in my screenshot AND it’s enabled. So, I’ll turn that off and see if that solves my issue.

Thanks for the tip!

Well, I have an update! I went to the office and logged into the drive. I found the “Drive Sleep” setting but decided to leave it alone since I learned that doesn’t prevent logins from over the Internet. The drive had a “Critical” diagnostic status for the hard drive. So, I ran a quick test and the full test and both came up clean. I rebooted the NAS (from within the dashboard) and all appears to be well, once again. The NAS had been running for 62 days, so it probably needed to e rebooted.

Thanks again for the response!
