MyCloudMirror Usage/setup

Has anyone put any detailed usage & setup posts?

The PDF manual is very vague, step by step instructions for various uses would be great, especially incorporating most common 3rd party softwares such as filezilla, VLC etc.

Seems there are many options to setup but with no instruction 90% of owners are not getting the best out of the hardware :o(

I have a son at uni and wanted him to stream or download movies etc from mycloud but its just so slow with no indication of what is happening, thought I would set up filezilla but again I have questions that I can’t get simple answers too about my external ip, how do I set this up on his laptop in filezilla if my provider changes it everytime I connect?

There maybe ways to stream more successfully from mycloud but I have no clue about most options in setup to know if anythings help or conlflict?

Come on WD please put some good sticky tutorials on how to get the best out of what looks like a great bit of hardware.

also just realised, many posts stating that 3rd party software is not supported such as Filezilla etc,

so if we enable FTP on the cloud we can FTP files without any 3rd party software?

Hello,

3rd party apps are not supported. you can use the WD My Cloud desktop app.

you can also take a look at this link:

How to access data using FTP on a WD Personal Cloud drive and other WD NAS devices

“After the FTP service has been enabled on the Dashboard of the network drive, authorized users will be able to access the device through the FTP protocol.”

But how? will I be doing more than drag & drop? will it be any quicker?

Marge, to alleviate the external IP changing problem, you can use a service like dyndns. Go to Dyndns.com and you can either use their free Dyndns service or for a very small $20 you can get DynDNS Pro service for a year. I highly recommend you get the Pro service, which gives you 30 domain names that you can pick all pointing to your IP. Now of course you can manually update your current IP anytime it changes through Dyndns.com website, but why bother. Mirror’s dashboard has built-in support for DynDNS and once you provide your DynDNS info and successfully test out the login credential, anytime your Mirror detects your external IP has changed (and Mirror constantly checks for that) it will automatically update your DynDNS service’s info with the updated IP and instantly and automatically your custom DNS like let’s say marge.dyndns.org will point to your new IP, without you taking any action. You can find this setting in the dashboard under Settings → Network → Network Service → Dynamic DNS…just click configure and setup with your DynDNS login info.

As for your ftp question, you can most certainly use filezilla. I have been using it for the past 6 months with my EX2, which shares the same firmware with the Mirror. Just enable ftp access on the shares you need to grant your son access to from the dashboard’s shares tab, after you have set him up as an user, and he can ftp into the device anytime using the userid/password you have setup his user account with on the dashboard. Plain ftp works but is unsecure because data passes unencrypted over the Net but Mirror’s firmware supports FTPS which is what I recommend you use. I believe you have to use FTPS using implicit SSL but it might be explicit SSL. Filezilla supports FTPS over both implicit and explicit SSL…you will have to play with it and see which works. You can do a test of all this from your home after you have setup ftp by using the external IP when connecting for a FTP or FTPS trial run.

If this info helps you, please click on the star under my username to the left to express your thanks by giving me a kudo. Kudos help keep me motivated to answer queries like yours.

If you are unsure how to use filezilla for ftp, just check out the screenshots on filezilla’s website. Plus, I’m sure Google will offer you countless sites with detailed info on how to use FileZilla and ftp…but filezilla site’s documentation is the authoritative place for info, though they may be just a bit skimpy on the details for a newbie…but it should still have plenty of detail to help you get started.

Thank You Cybernut1 for great description of what is needed, I used to use filezilla quite a bit but its been a few years now and you soon forget. Been really busy since the weekend so have not had the time to try out your suggestions and to make matters worse I now seem to have problems simply transfering files internally on my lan. Seems many others also suffer the same problem.

The drives are constantly active even though no one is accessing the cloud, I’ve been out at work all morning so if raid was backing up files it has had plenty of idle time to do it.

The main problem is that there is no indication of what is going on, just when it seems the cloud has finally gone idle I’ll try to transfer some files but after a short while all transfers fail because both drives are working flat out again? at what I din’t know…
