Front light blinking red after upgrade to OS 5

Hello! Yesterday I updated my WD My Cloud to the new OS 5 as recommended in the dashboard. The upgrade worked fine and I started backing up the photos from my mobile to My Cloud. Today I tried to search for the photos from my mobile app and the server was showing offline. I then tried to login from my desktop but, wan´t able as well (received a message of connection timeout). After that a restarted My Cloud by removing the power and connecting it again. After this, the front light started flashing red and I´m not able to access the equipment anymore. What can I do to fix it, please?

Thanks for the feedback Mjoelk. I cannot access the device though. It shows offline on my dashboard. I have tried the soft reset and the hard reset of the equipment but, still cannot access it. I have checked power supply, have restarted my router but, it keeps still flashing the red light and I can’t have access to it. There is a noise indicating the attempt to access the hard drive. Everything was working fine before the OS update.

@BernardoPinto
After rebooting your My Cloud did you reboot your router? You do have it connected to your router?

Yes, I have reboot the router after I rebooted My Cloud. I also have tried rebooting the router before rebooting My Cloud.

I believe the red blinking light means you are not getting proper network connection.

Assuming you didn’t do anything silly like change network cables, I think I would rule out hardware since you just did something major to the software.

One possible issue is the IP range is being used by your router. Are you using the conventional private IP address range (E. G. 192.168.Xx.XX), Or are you using something weird and custom On the router? I think iOS 5 only likes being on One of the three designated private IP Ranges.

Also, are you trying to assign a fixed IP address to the Nas using the router? If so try clearing that setting on the router and letting normal DHCP do it’s thing.

Hi NAS_user, thanks for the response.
I use an Apple Airport Express router which has a fixed IP address. I haven’t made any changes on network setup. The NAS was working fine and indexing the photos that were backed up from my mobile via WI-FI. On the following day I tried to login on the dashboard and received a connection timeout message. I tried to access thru my mobile app as well and My Cloud was showing offline. At this time the front light was flashing blue. I took power off and putted on again and when the equipment restarted the front light started blinking red. I cannot access the equipment thru the dashboard to check the IP configuration. It shows offline on the dashboard.

OK . . . .so this is an old 2nd generation single Disk mycloud?

You say it was working fine… . . then rolled over and died?
The actual symptoms were. . . . .it was non-responsive so you cold-booted the device. . .and then it croaked?

Yeah. . . the 2nd Gen MyClouds REALLY don’t like OS5. The Mirrors barely have the hardware to survive indexing. . . .and I hear about more failures than successes on the older single bay myclouds.

So. . . . .my suggestion. . .

  • Give the “red flatline” one full day to see if it recovers.
  • Disable the fixed IP address funciont on the airport express. Let DHCP do it’s think
  • Do a 40 second reset on the MyCloud. . . . .
  • Pray.

. . . and if you get the device actually to work again. . . seriously reconsider having cloud services enabled.

Thanks NAS_user!

Yeah, this is the 2nd gen single disk MyCloud. If this model really don’t like OS5, the upgrade shouldnd be recommended by WD, right? The sound it makes looks like the read-write head of the hard disk is stuck. One option I’m considering is removing the hard disk and try to access it from a docking station cloner. I hope that works. I have a lot of important and sensitive data on the HD.
