I used to run the WD MyCloud desktop app, locate the file, right click, and click on “Copy Link”. I would then paste the link into an email and send it to the recipient. They could then click on the link and download the file. But now, when the link is clicked the message “This site can’t be reached” is displayed. I’ve tried re-booting, and looking at the settings but to no avail.
This sounds like it MAY answer my question (pre-sales). I want to store photos in folders on the My Cloud device (MCD). I want to find a share link for folders on the MCD that I can post on a (restricted access ) web site to enable web site users to click the link and see the list of photos there. I’d like for them to be able to VIEW or DOWNLOAD (in original resolution) the photos. ie, I’m looking for a photo server solution. Slideshow functionality would be excellent, but not a deal breaker.
Is this possible with MCD?
Is it possible for the share link to have either view or edit permissions?
Minutia - small ATV club posting ride photos for club members to view on club web site. I get the security risks. That is why I noted the site is restricted access. We currently use a OneDrive but MS is cutting our storage by 2/3rds.
First, if you are interested in the single bay My Cloud units, you should read the My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25) to get a full understanding for the devices features (capabilities and limitations) and how to configure the features. As to your questions.
Generally no. you cannot post an image (like one can with online photo storage sites like Photobucket) to a web page.
One can create a link that will allow someone else to view or download the file but one cannot “edit” that file online within the single My Cloud. The single bay My Cloud devices are a basic NAS device that has LIMITED remote access capabilities. If you need full fledged online hosting of media files then use an online service dedicated for that purpose. The single bay My Cloud is not designed to host public web servers. It’s hardware is limited. There are ways to unofficially modify or replace the single bay My Cloud firmware to run web servers where it “might” be possible to do what you seek but to do so involves some knowledge of Linux and SSH. Do a forum search for those threads.
The single bay My Cloud is designed for the casual home user. WD has more expensive business class units that are more capable that support the addition of third party modules that may feature a web server or other modules to perform what you seek.
I wasn’t clear enough.
Currently, using Microsoft OneDrive I permit photographers to use a single account to access the OneDrive, create folders for rides, and upload photos to those folders. That is the edit permission.
I log in to the drive, click a folder and get a view only share link for the folder (containing images). I select one of the images from the folder, put a thumbnail copy on the photo library web page and create a hyperlink using the view only share link. That’s the view only permission.
Site users open the photo library page and click an image. The link opens the shared folder on the OneDrive and displays thumbnails of all the images there. Users can click an image to see it full screen. They can view a slideshow of the images, select and download any group of images or download the entire folder. Images are both stored and downloaded in their full resolution.
Is there ANY MCD that would support those capabilities? I am not at all interested in photobucket-like sites. We’ve expanded our storage to 1TB for now and that is adequate for the foreseeable future. So this isn’t a crisis. I’m looking at options before it becomes a crisis.
