Direct Macbook Book Air to EX4100 transfer speeds?

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could share with me what I should approx. expect for transfer speeds from my 2013 MBA, i7, 8gb of ram, etc. with the ethernet adapter and a direct connection to the ethernet port of the ex4100.

I have ALOT of data to transfer. Approx. 5 tb in two folders.

Testing this configuration both draging one of the 2.05 tb folders to one of my shares folders on the NAS, I am getting crazy differences in speeds. Based on my calculations I am getting anywhere from 20.8 mb/s to 46/.8 mb/s.

I would just like to know that while my finder copy window says it will take about 21 more hours to transfer the balance of my data (it has only transferred 240 gb out of the 2.05 tb) that it is working as best as it can, that I have everything connected and setup up for maximum speed and that there is not another way or any modifications or changes I can make to increase my speed.

Thank you in advance,

Jack

According to the full user manual for this model (which can be downloaded from WD) you have this connected incorrectly.  The computer and EX4100 are not to be directly connected to one another.  They both are to be separately connected to the router directly, or through a network switch.

See image snip from page 10 of manual below.

Thank you for the response.

I was told by a customer service agent, when I called WD technical support for a related, but different, issue, that if i connect directly it would be the best connection and eliminate the router.  So, now I’m still a bit confused about the fastest way to transfer all of this data.  I suppose my options are include the external hard drive plugged into the computer or plugged directly into the NAS and also whether to use a USB 3.0 connect or a an ethernet connection and a router or not.

What you say customer service said is news to me.  Look, ideally, a NAS should be connected to the home network (i.e. router) so ALL your devices, including computers can access the NAS.  When I have commected a fast USB 3.0 drive to my fast PC  and copy a file through my gigabit network to my NAS I have reached speeds over 100+ MB/sec.  The NAS specs say top speed can be 115 MB/sec.

Get the user manual and read it so you know how to use this thing.
