The increased amperage should not be a problem in any way. I suspect many people who have sudden problems with their box would do well to replace the power supply. The wall warts supplied are by design electrically “noisy” on the 12v side and the problem gets worse over time was the capacitors age and just like everything else are supplied by the low bidder.

It’s been 6 days since my downgrade on two boxes, and neither has frozen yet and they get daily use. For me, this is the solution I need.

Because when i enable 127 as dns address, it starts show low memory. Or just not awake via remote.

i have 3 wdtv’s .two i did the 127 dns trick with the low memory eroor message.the other i let the default dns with latest firmware. 2.02.32 and for 24 hrs now it hasnt freeze.so is it fixed by now?because the suspicious site is up?

I agree with you fuorigioco1981. No freezes for me too after removing the blocking from my router. I also noticed in the router’s log file that the number of retries from the player went to 0 form 10,000 a days.

Yes, same here, working now the site is back up. Although I had to unblock it for my WD box to connect to it at least once. It was still freezing after a couple days otherwise. Now I wonder if I should still block that website again anyway in case WD decides to take it down or it breaks it in the future.

But after they put the web site back on, I did not have any freezing or retries (10000 each day) from my wdtv live smp using the 2.02.32 Fw.
I also got rid of the low memory message by doing the full reset , from the reset menu.

After looking into this problem and using Wireshark as a sniffer I have a pretty good explanation for the problems people have been experiencing and why some solutions work until they don’t. I’ve resisted rolling back from the latest version because I’d like to keep using some of the features it introduced. On the 25th of November fuorgioco1981 pointed out that the offending site http://www.wdtvlive.com/wsapps/appservice.svc/json/browseapp had been restored and he hadn’t experienced any hangs since. Indeed today, Dec 4, I was able to run through an entire movie without any significant retransmissions or other errors from the wdtvlive.com site. I did see some retransmission between my wdtv box and my pc when the Upnp connection was being refreshed. I suspect over several days this might cause the wdtv device performance to degrade. However, on Dec 2nd I restarted my wdtv device and attempted to play a movie and the device froze almost immediately. On the analyzer I saw that wdtv had attempted a GET on http://www.wdtvlive.com/wsapps/appservice.svc/json/browseapp 
 and had received the reply “HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily”. Apparently wdtv was not able to handle this reply and soon there was a flurry Retransmissions from the wdtv device to which www.wdtvlive.com kept replying that the site had temporarily moved. Finally, the wdtv quit responding, presumably because it had run out of memory. It did still respond to pings, but I had to unplug it and reboot it to start working again.
I fixed the problem (the wdtv stayed solid for several days) by blocking access to www.wdtvlive.com in my router. One thing I noticed was that after I rebooted the wdtv device it continued to attempt a DNS lookup about four times a minute apparently forever. I believe this explains why the 127.0.0.1 solution worked initially then failed. The DNS requests eventually used up wdtv’s memory. Of course any well designed program would have released memory used by the request when it failed, as it should have quit attempting to contact wdtvlive after a few failures as well. The other problem with the 127.0.0.1 solution is that you can no longer connect to sites like flickster and Netflix. I mostly solved the DNS lookup problem by unblocking the www.wdtvlive.com site access for ten minutes or so after rebooting the wdtv device. The seemed to permit the wdtv to look up the sites address and make establish an initial contact. When I blocked the site again, the DNS lookups were reduced to once every two minutes, and in the case where the browseapp link was active, no more DNS lookups at all.
One caveat: I was fortunate in that I had a TP-Link router lying around and used that to investigate the problem. The router I actually used to connect to the internet was an old Actiontec Q1000 modem. When I turned on website blocking on the Actiontec I noticed first that DNS still worked to look up the address of the wdtvlive site and that instead of ignoring the request the Actiontec would respond with the warning that the site had been blocked. The wdtvlive did not know how to handle this message and the result was multiple retransmissions between the router and wdtvlive. So all routers my not work. The symptoms I observed while watching movies were a stall of the video, jerky motion and eventually a freeze up.
A couple other things I noticed: When my wdtvlive device first froze up I went online and saw that several people had been able to resolve the problem by rebooting their PCs. I tried this and it seemed to resolve the problem for a couple days. Looking at the transmission on the wire I saw that there was traffic between the computers on my network and the wdtvlive box. There was even a broadcast to my wife’s iPhone. The majority of the traffic seemed to involve UPnP traffic, mostly to update the icon information as far as I could see. After wdtvliv contacted the wdtvlive site I noted multiple retransmissions between other computers and the wdtvlive box. In other words something on the wdtvlive box had become corrupted. The device seemed to recover, but the way memory was handled in other situations I don’t doubt that in time this might lead to another freeze. Perhaps that’s why rebooting the PC had solved the problem previously.
Hope all this helps, or at least explains what’s going on. I have to say I’m rather disappointed in WD support. Even if they no longer want to support the WD TV Media Player they should take responsibility to let the user community know what’s causing the problem. The majority of the hangs seem to be the result of the device attempting to contact wdtvlive.com. Even with test it shouldn’t take more than a couple days to eliminate this call. It’s probably all located in some subroutine that could return a stubbed out response.

Thanks Rudolpho for your in-depth investigation. It’s good to know why some of the “fixes” only seemed to work temporarily. It appears that WD has restored functionality to the webpage/script in question, and my boxes have been working well for about a week now. I do agree with your disappointment as to the complete lack of communication/acknowledgment from WD on the issue.

After downgrading to the previous firmware version which mostly worked fine, I’ve decided to go back to the latest firmware based on reports here of it now working. But when I try a manual update from the network I get a message saying the device fails to check from the network. The WD box is on the network and it is working fine. Is there a way of upgrading the firmware from the network
I would rather not go the USB route.

So, has there been any sort of announcement or post from WD about this? Anywhere? I would think that someone, somewhere from that company would be on this site and would say something like, “Yeah, we accidentally broke that, and it’s fixed now. Really sorry abut that.”

Instead, we get crickets. I am quite far along the road of now absolutely hating this company, one I’ve loved for 30 years.

I received a private message earlier this week from one of the “senior engineers” for WDTV asking if I was still having issues. He stated, “We, at Western Digital, have been investigating this issue and have since implemented a few back-end changes to help resolve your issue.”

I replied that I thought it was bad form for WD to 1) have broken the web service in question and 2) not have acknowledged the problem on the forum or announce they were investigating or fixing it. I didn’t receive any further reply.

Of course. I told him that now that the WD server-side script was working again, I haven’t had any of the lockups. As I said, I also expressed my disappointment with WD’s handling of the matter but appreciate that they at least have fixed it.

Nice finding, unfortunately it doesn’t work for me because I don’t connect WDTV to the internet.
a) I don’t trust WD (to goto internet)
b) Some places I travel to, don’t have internet
c) When I connected it to the internet to use youtube, youtube always crashed.

It’s now super easy for WD to FIX their BUGGED FW, comunity users did WD job findind the memory leak source.
