Cannot use TimeMachine backups

Hello,

After upgrading to MacOS Catalina I can no longer use my My Cloud Home NAS for Time Machine backups. The drive is no longer accessible from the Finder or the Time Machine preferences panel.

I think I’m running g the latest versions of WD software:

WD Discovery v3.8.229
WD Desktop v.2.1.0.372

What can be done to restore Time Machine functionality?

What’s happening?
What MCH firmware version?
What does it say in the time machine preference panel?

The NAS drive is simply unavailable. It does not appear in the list of available “Locations” in the finder as it did under Mojave. The Time Machine preferences panel does not list the drive when I click on “Add or Remove Backup Disk”.

Not sure, how do I determine this. There is no firmware version information listed in the WD discovery app.

As I describe above, the WD drive is not listed as a possible backup drive when I click on “Add or Remove Backup Disk…” in the Time Machine preferences panel.

I under Mojave I was using the MCH drive, but under Catalina TimeMachine fails because it usable to mount the drive. I tried removing it, but then could not add it back because its no longer listed.

Is the light flashing on the device?
Can you access the private user space via discovery?
What about mycloud.com?

the questions myself too, no experiences? Walgreenslistens

Yes, with WE Discovery running, my device is visible in the Favourites section of the Finder and I can view the contents of that section of the device. The corresponding MyCloud-xxxxxx.local entry in the Finder’s Locations list does not appear. The device is not listed as a backup destination in the Time Machine preferences panel.

How bizarre.
Soft reset maybe? Or full erase?

I’ve powered the thing down but that did not resolve the problem. I don’t see any means through WD Discovery to force a reformat of the device (though I suspect the issue is firmware rather than the contents of the disk).

This problem started immediately after I upgraded to Catalina in February (long after Catalina was released so one expects WD would have had time to sort out any compatibility issues).

As the device’s sole purpose for me is to provide TimeMachine backups, it’s effectively a brick at this point. I need a reliable backup disk so I’m going to have to replace it if some sort of solution does not appear shortly.

Are there any WD representatives on this forum who could shed some light on what the problem might be?

You cannot do that through Discovery.
You can soft and hard reset with a paper clip. All explained in the manual.
Or from the mycloud.com web interface.
If you don’t mind loosing your current back ups, maybe you can in the end try a hard reset.

I had plenty of issues with this piece of hardware, but Time Machine share showing up has never been one.

I’ll add that I dug out and fired an old laptop which is still running Mojave. That machine was able to see and connect to the My Cloud device without any problems, both from the Finder and from the Time Machine preferences panel.

This confirms for me that some compatibility issues with Catalina remain to be resolved.
