Cannot connect to My Cloud, have tried just about everything

Like the title says. I’ve searched here, Google, Duck Duck Go, and everything I’ve tried leaves me nowhere.

Earlier today (Tue 4 Sep 2018) I could connect to My Cloud using my Mac Mini (macOS High Sierra). Later, when trying to open a directory, it could not connect, and I entered my name and password for my personal folders (not Public). I tried to connect to Public, and could not.

The front LED is solid white.
The back LEDs are orange with the occasional blinking green.

I tried accessing through my MacBookPro.
I tried accessing through my girlfriend’s Win10 laptop.
I tried using the app on my Mac and my Android phone.

I tried restarting my computer.
I tried restarting the router.
I tried unplugging My Cloud and plugging back in.
I tried removing and reattaching the ethernet cable.
I tried the 4 second reset.
I tried the 40 second reset.
I tried letting it sit quietly for over an hour.

I tried a large number of combinations of the above options.

Both the green blinking LED on the back and the flashing on the router lead me to believe that there is a connection, but I can’t figure out why this isn’t working at all.

The only thing left to do is open up the case and try directly attaching the HDD to my computer, but I’d rather try other things before that, if anyone can help.

can you ping the device? perhaps you can connect using known i.p.

@Abe I didn’t ping it before, but I just tried now, on your suggestion. The result is “Request timeout”.

I also cannot connect if I go to “Connect to Server” in Finder and directly enter the i.p.

Minor update: the front LED light is now solid yellow.

I still cannot connect or get anything working. I’ve tried all of the above again.

With the timeout message, it looks like the device is not connected to your LAN,

  • How did you get the i.p. in the first place?
  • Does the device have a permanent i.p. assigned?, if not, check your router and verify DHCP leases to get i.p. of device. then try to connect using i.p.

@Abe I had the i.p address of the drive through my router dashboard. I have a list of the i.p. addresses of each connected device on my network; some of them, including My Cloud, have permanent i.p addresses. The i.p address of My Cloud is showing up on the list of devices still. It is connected to the router, and the back LED lights on My Cloud are solid orange and flickering green.

Trying to connect via the i.p. address results in “cannot connect to server”.

As far as I know, if the Cloud device cannot be pinged in the LAN, then it is not connected and inaccessible in the LAN. I assume MyCloud does not block ping requests. This problem then could be due to various networking issues/possibilities, regrets, I am not sure how I could help any further.

I checked my MyCloud device, in the network cable jack, both lights are green and one is blinking. You mentioned your device has orange and occasional blinking green, it looks like your device is not connected to the network.

Thanks, @Abe. I’m not sure what else to try, but I appreciate your help!

You may need to know which version of single drive My Cloud you are using as the LED indicators may be slightly different between the older first gen v3.x/v4.x My Cloud and the later v2.x My Cloud. The following links to the My Cloud User Manual explains what the LED colors/status indicates.

V2.x My Cloud:
Front LED: http://products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-705147.pdf#page=12
Back LEDs: http://products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-705147.pdf#page=13

V3.x/V4.x My Cloud:
Front LED: http://products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-705103.pdf#page=12
Back LEDs: http://products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-705103.pdf#page=13

For the first gen My Cloud the White front LED means the following:
Blinking:

  • Displays when you first apply power to the unit.
  • Reset pressed.

Solid:

  • Device has begun loading the Operating System (OS).
  • Firmware update in progress.

Sometimes it may take the My Cloud some time (10 to 20 minutes or longer) to fully boot into the firmware OS as it may be scanning files/hard drive during bootup to index files or check the health of the hard drive…

Other suggestions (if they haven’t been suggested yet). Connect the My Cloud directly to a computer’s networking port. Try a different networking port on the router. Try a new ethernet cable. Try putting a switch between the My Cloud and router. Remove the hard drive (voids the warranty) and attach to a Linux computer (or use third party Linux drivers for Windows PC’s) to check the status of the files on the hard drive.

@Bennor, I have the first gen. The back Link LED is yellow, according to the manual means " Cable is plugged in, and both ends of the link have successfully established communications. Network negotiated at 100 Mbps."

The back Activity LED is occasionally blinking green

The front is solid white.

I have tried connecting to the ethernet port on both my MacBook Pro and my girlfriend’s Win10 laptop. I’ve tried a new ethernet cable. I tried a different ethernet port on the router.

I have not tried a switch. I currently don’t have one. I’d also rather exhaust all my options before opening up the box.

After doing more searching, I’m wondering if it’s the firmware issue? I recently moved and had the drive unplugged for a while, and it looks like the firmware release came out in May. I’d only plugged the drive back in a couple weeks ago. Could it have automatically updated the firmware and now there is an issue with the network connections?

[ETA] Was able to ping the IP of the drive, but get the “There was a problem connecting to the server” error when trying to connect through Finder.

Perhaps the i.p. you are using is incorrect.
Go to your browser and type-in ‘My Cloud’, this is the url I used for my MyClout EX2-Ultra. This will search for mycloud devices on your network.

@Abe, the i.p. must be incorrect. If I go to My Cloud or mycloud.local, neither work. I’m just about ready to give up.

The heckin drive just started magically working again today. I can access it through Finder, but not through My Cloud or http://mycloud.local (also http://wdmycloud.local). The WD apps finds the device but cannot connect to it.

I was able to access my Public folders and my Time Machine backups, but I can’t login in at all, and there are files on my private user accounts.

Still not sure what’s going on, but at least I can access my backups.
