Are problems caused by Arris Modem / Router?

After solving a number of other issues that caused remote access problems to my MyCloud device in May 2019, one remaining issue appeared to be caused by the Arris Modem / Router installed by Verizon. I contacted Verizon who acknowledged that this was a known problem and told me they would work on resolving it.
I never heard back from Verizon specifically on this issue and I have been sending hard-copy documents by USPS mail ever since, because the My Cloud could not be accessed remotely. While that worked for a while, the need to share more documents confidentially is steeply increasing and I now need to really solve this issue.
About one month ago Verizon emailed me informing that the Modem / Router had received a software upgrade. It did not state whether this was a regular upgrade of related to the My Cloud incompatibility.

Yesterday, while accessing WD My Cloud over the local network, the following happened:

  1. The text “Not secure” was indicated to the left of the IP address.
  2. Requests for registration emails sent to my email address never arrived in my email.

In addition I was not able to remotely access WD My Cloud via https://www.wd2go.com/

Looking through issues related to remote My Cloud access , I read about the SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support feature. When I checked my Windows Features, this box was indeed unchecked. After checking this box and a reboot, I am now able to remotely access WD My Cloud via https://www.wd2go.com/.
The other two issues still remain. Could this still be caused by incompatibility issues with the Arris router, or does this have different causes?

All help is strongly appreciated!

Vincent

There is a known issue with some ISP routers where the My Cloud cannot obtain a connection to the local LAN. WD has a knowledgebase article covering the issue. The workaround is to put a network switch between the ISP router and the My Cloud.

My Cloud is not recognized when connected to AT&T Uverse, Pace, Arris, Ubee or Sonic Gateway Routers

For remote access problems one may have to disable Remote Access/Cloud Access through the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings section, wait a few minutes, then re-enable that option.

In certain rare cases one may have to set the Cloud Access option to Manual in the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings. Then configure the router to port forward the two ports to the My Cloud IP address. In certain cases the ISP may block the default remote access ports. If this is the case one can try using ports 8080 and ports 4443.

As written above, after checking the SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support box in Windows features, the remote access problem was overcome (at least for the admin user), but the two other issues remain. Could those be caused by the Arris ISP routers?
In that case I will have to ask Verizon to replace the router with one without such problems.
If the router is unlikely to be the cause of the problem, how can I fix the remaining problems:

  1. The text “Not secure” was indicated to the left of the IP address.
  2. Requests for registration emails sent to my email address never arrived in my email.

Thanks for your help,

Vincent

Use http://MyCloud.com or http://files.mycloud.com/ for the My Cloud remote access portal.

Check the spam folder of the email you used for setting up Remote Access/Cloud Access. Or try a different email address. For example I typically won’t get MyCloud emails set to my ISP free email service provided by Yahoo.com/Att.net. I have to use a throwaway email address at AOL (or some other service) instead.

There are two switches in between the ISP router and the WD My Cloud, the 1st one due to a mistake by Verizon (directly downstream of the router), the 2nd one takes care of the distribution of the LAN over the house. I will try different email addresses.

I did disable Remote Access/Cloud Access through the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings section followed after a few minutes by re-enabling Remote Access/Cloud Access.

I checked the spam folder yesterday. Nothing there!

Today the email update of your reply at community.wd.com came in as two messages message: one at the regular email address as one in the spam folder.

Thanks for your help,

Vincent
