I’m setting up my new MyCloud 3TB and am in the process of backing up my files. Its been 3 days runinng constantly and I’ve only backed up 147Gb which is frustrating. I cant move my computer to where the router is so its being transferred wirelessly.
I’m trying to map my network drive but the option is always greyed out so I cant select it. Anytime I try to do anything it says “Windows does not have permnission to access wdcloud…contact your network administrator …blah blah”
Sometimes one may need to select “Connect using different credentials” on the Map Network Drive dialogue box (example below) on Windows to trigger Windows to popup the dialog box where you can input the WD My Cloud “User” and their password for Shared folders that are password protected.
Also check to ensure the WD My Cloud User has the appropriate permissions to read/write on the Share you are trying to map in the WD My Cloud Dashboard Share section.
I dont have a homegroup set up but I do have file and printer sharing on, network discovery on, password protected sharing is off etc.
I think it mightbe because it cansee WD MY Cloud in network discovery but not the individual shares. I have a hard drive plugged into it and my PC seems to be willing to let me map that (though I dont want to)
after all this work it seemsSmartware wont accept the only password I only ever use and so I may have to wipe the drive to access it. If thats the case after FIVE days of transfering files, this bl00dy thing will have to go back to the shop - way too much effort for a supposedly plug and play consumer technology.
It seems like you now have two problems. First being able to map the drive. Second being Smartware Pro. They could be related. If you are unable to use a username and password to log into the WD My Cloud while mapping a drive its possible that is carrying over to Smartware Pro and the Smartware program has the same problem of being unable to authenticate with the WD My Cloud drive.
At this point there is no need to wipe the drive or the files on it. First step is to figure out why you cannot map the drive. For starters it is recommended to set a static IP on the WD My Cloud if possible. See the following WD SUpport link for more information: How to configure a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 drive with a Static IP
Some other suggestions:
Make sure both the WD My Cloud and the computer are using the same “network name”. Typically both Windows and the WD My Cloud default to “workgroup”.
I can log in to the cloud through the other software - the dashboard etc,…with the same login - just not smartware so this cant be a problem with my password. Thats the strange thing.
Its already set to static IP
I did the cmd thing
FTP was already disabled
No change - still can only map the hard drive attached to the cloud
I’m so fed up with it. I have so many problems right now that need my attention and this shouldnt be taking so much time
Rebooted and restored to factory with help of wd support and it is now allowing me in and have mapped network drives.
Just one problem now still pertaining to passwords
Everything was fine, I am transfering data from pc to cloud, but it was set to public access and since I share a house with others I wanted to add a password to my username. So I added a password to my username, and now the computer is not letting me view the share, saying I dont have the appropriate pernissions…
How can I set a password to the share, and still get in!?

Good. I was going to suggest to did a factory restore to get back to a known state, as it was difficult to know the state of your system, and thus know how to advise you to fix it. Hopefully, support explained the various aspects of the operation of your device, and didn’t simply get you to re-run the automated setup, as this would teach you nothing about how to control your device.
Keep a ‘logbook’ of changes you make to your system, how you made them (settings, tools, etc) and whether they work or not. Then you can go back and see how you did something (if you need to do it again), and also make a summary of your system settings. I use a simple text file, so I can search it for relevant strings to find information.

I would delete the network drive mappings you have already created.
Then create new mappings to your shares. When you go to create new mappings, it should ask you for your username and password.
I’m having a problem. I unmapped the drive, and set the password and then went to map it but havign the same problm…
Whenever I set a password to my user (e.g. ME) with full control, and then try to access the drive share called ME, it keeps rejecting my login. Says I dont have permission.
I’ve had to remove the password protection but this is a real problem because right now, my housemates will have TOTAL access to all my personal files which are now on the drive as I cant password protect.
if you have another drive mapped already with a different user and password, this could be a reason why you are unable to do so. Disconnect from the others if so and just connect to the WDCloud.
You can also change the WDCloud to the same credentials as your Window login and thus it uses your window user name and password automatically when mapping.
