WD TV Live Plus Networking Bug in 1.03.29_B

Our company just purchased 7 units of the new WD TV Live Plus.  Prior to this, we were testing and using a WD TV Live (Non-Plus) unit and it was working great for us.  Basically, we plugged a USB flash drive into these units and was able to access the content of the flash drive remotely from a Windows PC by going to \WDTVLIVE\flashdrive.  And with the Non-Plus version, we were able to setup a password to access the flash drive remotely (basically WD TV acts as a simple Samba share).  However, with the Plus version, whenever I enabled the password protection, I cannot login to the network share to access the flash drive…  I’ve messed with it for hours and am 100% sure that I was typing in the exact password and username I created, but Windows kepted re-prompting me for password and username as if I’m typing them in incorrectly.  I’ve tried this on XP and Windows 7, on domain and non-domain computers.  I could get none of them to even pass the login portion.  When I do the exact same thing on the non-Plus version, it worked right away.  And this is happening to all 7 of the Plus units, so I’m almost sure that this is a bug in the firmware.  Has anyboy else experienced this issue?

Hmmm.   I don’t remember password protection being available on the Live.   I thought that was something new on the 1.03 firmware line.   I’ll try to do this when I get home tonight (on my Non-upgraded Live) and see what happens.

I’ll also try my Plus.

Sorry, this is an open bug at the moment. The root cause is known, but I have no ECD on a fix.

Thanks for the confirmation.  We currently use this following work-around for those out there that needs remote management of the flash content and don’t want a open free-for-all file share.

We are using managed switches to manage the security of these units.  Basically we setup the Live Plus units to have a open (unprotected) network share and only enable the switch port that these units are plugged in when we need to modify the files that it’s playing.  After we modify them, we just shut down the switchport.

Hopefully this will be fixed in the next firmware release.

By the way, we are using these units as video message boards in our company.  It is a very economical way to implement it.  If WD can put in a few additional video message board functions, I’d be willing to pay more.  Perhaps WD can create a version that can:

  • auto-play a folder/play-list when the unit starts

  • web-based remote unit management

Your post sounds more like an Idea or a Feature Request. The best place for this is in our Ideas Lab. This way someone from WD will be sure to see it. However, I would search first and make sure that there isn’t another idea similar to yours that you could add your post to and vote on.

John, it DOES have auto-play available.   I don’t think it’s folder-based, but it is there in some regard (never tried it, though…)

hello

i just bought a new wd player live plus.

try to acces the sahre on my network pc from the wd player and the player prompts me with an invalid password.

Can you tell me how to fix

i have also tried to access teh share froma  regular pc and it works.

What do you mean it prompts you with an invalid password?   YOU provide the password, not it.
