WD TV Live Hub - It can't see shared drives

Hmm.  Ok, I follow now.

I’ve seen issues where PC’s get confused if they have multiple interfaces active.

Try this just for testing:   Turn off one of the interfaces on the NAS so that all devices have to chat on the same interface.

If that WORKS, then it’s likely the NAS is having an issue with Master Browser running two interfaces.

Thanks, and done. I pulled the second Ethernet cable (the one going into the switch), verified I could ping the primary interface, and not the one I disconnected.

Booted up the WDTV and went to select content source under Videos, and Network Share returns “No storage present”.

I also hear a faint laugh in the background remniscent of the Green Goblin character from the late Spiderman movies in the background. Is my gear laughing at me lol?

The second interface can stay disconnected for a while, and the WDTV will stay on. Maybe they will decide to talk.

EDIT: Not really knowing anyuthing about the process for a windows share browser election, I shut down Samba on the Linux box, and rebooted the NAS & WDTV. No good so far.

Well, that’s a good place to start.    Here’s my script for Master Browser issues:

This is how to find possible problems with the Master Browser on your network, which will affect when and what servers appear on your WDTV Network Shares.

On one of your PCs, open up a “Command” window.

(In Win Vista and Win7, click the Orb, and in the search box, type CMD. An icon will appear above the box that says cmd.exe. Click it, and a Command window will open.)

(In WinXP, Click START, then RUN…, and in the box, type CMD. A Command Window will open.)

In the command window, enter the command “net view,” like this:

C:\Users\Tony>net view
Server Name Remark

\BIGNAS1 Big Freakin’ NAS Server 1
\MARS
\NEPTUNE
\WDTVLIVE WDTV LIVE
The command completed successfully.

In my example, there are four active devices that Windows has discovered.

Now, for EACH of those, issue the command “nbtstat -a (name)” for example:

C:\Users\Tony>nbtstat -a bignas1

Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [10.0.0.157] Scope Id:

NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

Name Type Status

BIGNAS1 <00> UNIQUE Registered
BIGNAS1 <03> UNIQUE Registered
BIGNAS1 <20> UNIQUE Registered
…__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered
WORKGROUP <1D> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <1E> GROUP Registered
WORKGROUP <00> GROUP Registered

So, we got lucky here, the FIRST system, BIGNAS1, indicates that it is the master browser, since it lists the name …__MSBROWSE__.

You need to find out WHICH system is your master browser. If none of these steps work as described, then the issue is likely on your PC itself, and that will require substantial additional troubleshooting.

I tried to follow these instructions to see if could give it a go but i don’t see my server only my win7 pc and the hub.

this is what i got. any ideas…

That would appear that the NAS server isn’t advertising itself into the workgroup.

try this command:

nbtstat -a [ip address of NAS]

Since your NAME isn’t showing up when you do NET VIEW, then the nbtstat command like you did with the name won’t work.  You’d probably get an error if you try the name, but the IP address should still work.

TonyPh12345, Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I tried the command and so i posted the results below i hope you can figure out whats going on and hopefully point me in the right direction to get this thing sorted out.

I really like the unit but not all this headache…

Ding Ding!   We have a winner.    There’s ONE BOX (192.168.2.3) that has the wrong Workgroup Name.   It’s labeled as “MSHOME,” whereas all the others are WORKGROUP.   They need to match.

Fix it, and I’ll bet you’ll be in business.

98_1LE:  I see the problem:  You have NO MASTER BROWSER on your network, at least given what you’ve shown here.   Without that, the HUB (or ANY SAMBA BOX will NOT be able to discover your servers.)

NONE of your hosts have the __MSBROWSE__ entry listed.

It’s surprising NONE of them are getting elected master…   Something deeper and more insidious may be happening…

Thank you, looking into how to make my NAS the master browser. I have a Samba box on the network also, but do not plan to serve media from it at this time. It doesn’t appear to be master browser either:

I figured out what my sharing issue was. The Linksys E3000 was the master browser, even though it didn’t have any storage. Changing its workgroup on the E3000 from WORKGROUP to something else, and waiting until the NAS box was the master browser solved it. I am watching Avatar over SMB and so far so good.

98_1LE:  I had the EXACT same issue with my E3000s (I have two on the net.)   Changing them to their OWN workgroup, which prevents them from being master of the HUB workgroup, fixed it for me.  I think Cisco has problems on that box…  Several other forums report the same thing…

shutterup:  From your previous post, was the HUB also set to MSHOME?   If so, it needs to change, too.

Yes i change it also but still a no go!!! I am gonna keep plugging away at it see what happens.

I really do appreciate all the help from you.

Hi Tony,

I did this and I see that my Win7 computer is the master browser. Is this okay? Do I need to make something else be the master browser? On my home network, I have my Win7 desktop (MB), Server/NAS, a WDTV Live + and the Hub.

Also, if I do need to change who the master browser should be; how do I do that?

Thanks!

The only reason you’d want to change your master browser is if you’re constantly turning your Win7 box on and off.

If it’s on 24x7, there’s probably no need to change anything.

It seems that having my Win7 as MSBROWSE is the reason why I cannot have my EX495 showing up on NETWORK SHARE. So, if that is the case, how can I make my EX495 the master browse? Thanks!

Let’s not do parallel threads.   Let’s work in the other thread.

Sir, I can’t be certain but, I had to sort of wake up windows by mapping one of the drives. I have three TB USB externals attached to a seagate freeagent dockstar(pogoplug bypassed). My workgroup became visible. Then over to my WDHUB setup menu, network settings, workgroup, retype workgroup name and submit. Hub restarted network and I can see the shared folders. I also hesitate to admit, I think the rebooting(unplugging) of all the network related devices a few times during all this experimentation might have been all that was necessary. I don’t know, just keep at it cause the Hub is great. Only wished it would deliver 7.1ch audio. Good luck.
