Hi there, I am looking to purchase the wd my cloud from the WD recertified store (4tb). I was wondering how I would check whether this was a 1st gen or 2nd gen model? Additionally I know its probably been asked numerous times but I just wanted a brief description of the main differences between gen 1 and 2. My usage will most likely be backing up phones and laptop pics videos etc, as well as potentially using the nas as a plex server.
The Gen1 has v4.x firmware, and the Gen2 has v2.x firmware.
The Gen1 has a real linux root file system that is hosted on the boot volume.
The Gen2 uses a ram based root file system and a read only cramfs container.
The Gen1 has 256mb of RAM and an 800ish mhz ARM CPU.
The Gen2 has 512mb of RAM and a dual core 1ghz-ish ARM CPU.
There is a way to tell them apart using the serial number on the back of the unit, but I am short on details.
@RealDeal the P/N number on the bottom of the single bay My Cloud unit or on the single bay My Cloud retail box will indicate if it is first gen or second gen.
P/N that ends with “-00” is first gen v3.x/v4.x firmware.
P/N that ends with “-10” is second gen v2.x firmware.
