WD Passport Ultra shows as CD drive

I bought a 1TB Passport Ultra to store my videos.
My OS is Windows XP.
When I connected the drive Windows did the usual “Found new software” auto plug and play driver load.
Since then The drive takes an age to load and then I get an error message.
Quote:
Windows - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive\Device\Harddisk1\DR47
End quote
The last two number vary each time I have tried.
Also it take three clicks on cancel to close it.

WD sent me a link to download
WD drive utilities.
This dose nothing to help resolve the problem
tried to run the Diagnose, Both drive test don’t work and the “Run drive test status” shows “SMART Status failed”
If I try to format with the down load it says “WD external drive format failed”
Driver updater says “No update available”
When I open “Properties” in My Computer it shows
Type : Local disk
File system : Raw
Free space 0
Used space 0

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi, have you tried using the drive on a different computer? Have you tried to use the drive with a different USB cable and USB port?

Only got one computer
Will try other USB ports tomorrow. Got a choice of five.
Might pop down to the local PC shop and get it formatted

Thanks

Thank you
Tried another USB port, same cable, and all is well
Had it connected via a USB hub, everything else works on there.
Now connected straight to the PC.

Thanks again

Hi, how did this worked out? I have a similar problem. The WD utility made things worse. Now the diskmanagement tool doesnt even start with the “cd drive”
