WD My Passport for Mac (Non-wireless) not recognized since El Capitan and Sierra Mac OS updates

I have not been able to use my 1TB WD My Passport for Mac (Non-wireless) on my macbook pro laptop for a while now. Ever since I have updated my operating system first to El Capitan and now also Sierra, the device is not recognized by my computer, and does not show up in disk utility. When I plug in the device, the LED turns on and it appears to run as usual, but I do not have access to it on my macbook. I tried plugging it into my iMac a few weeks ago before updating it which was running on Yosemite and it worked fine.

Are there new drivers that need to be installed to make my external drive compatible with Mac Sierra?
