Although kitfix full overwrite has completed and application ended the WD Red device (in an external USB dock) is still being accessed. Also KitfoxService and KitfoxbackgroundApp.exe processes are shown as still running in Task manager which leads me to think that the process has not completed (though the application thinks it has). Any thoughts?
The full overwrite likely completed successfully, but the Kitfox application did not shut down completely. The KitfoxService and KitfoxBackgroundApp.exe processes are still running, which means the service is holding an open handle to the WD Red drive even though the main application has closed. This is usually due to the background service not terminating properly and does not mean the overwrite failed. You can check which process is accessing the disk in Resource Monitor and stop the Kitfox service manually via services.msc. If it won’t stop, a reboot will fully release the drive. After reboot, if the disk shows as unallocated and there is no activity, the overwrite completed successfully and the issue was just the service still running.
Thank you. Hit the nail on the head. This was indeed the case.
