VPN usage causing connectivity or performance issues with WD My Cloud / NAS devices

Hi everyone,

I’m using a WD NAS (My Cloud / similar setup) at home for file storage and remote access, and I recently started using a VPN on my network for privacy and secure remote connections.

Since enabling the VPN, I’ve noticed some unusual behavior with the NAS. In some cases, access becomes slower, file transfers are less stable, or the device occasionally becomes temporarily unreachable until the network is reset. It seems to happen inconsistently, which makes it hard to pinpoint the exact cause. I understand that VPN traffic can affect routing, DNS, and local network discovery, but I’m trying to figure out whether this is a known limitation or if there are recommended configurations for WD devices when VPN is in use. I also came across similar discussions where VPN usage was linked to performance or connectivity issues on My Cloud systems.
For reference, I also found a general overview of how VPN behavior and protocols can impact network performance here: https://vpnmag.net/ — it explains differences between VPN types and their effect on speed and latency.

So I’d like to ask the community:

  • Are WD NAS devices sensitive to VPN traffic on the same local network?
  • Is it better to isolate NAS traffic (separate VLAN / switch / subnet) when using VPN?
  • Are there recommended router or network configurations to avoid these issues?

Any advice or real-world experience would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
