Using MyCloud as an ordinary external hard drive

Is it possible to connect the WD MyCloud hard drive as an ordinary USB external hard drive? I’ve always had a lot of trouble connecting to this drive as a network drive from our computers at home and think it would be better to just use it as a USB external drive if possible. Hopefully I can do this before purchasing an alternative and committing my MyCloud drive to the recycling?

No.

The My Cloud is a network attached storage device. It is not an external USB hard drive. The USB port on the back of the My Cloud is for attaching external USB hard drives to the My Cloud for expanding the device’s storage and to backup the My Cloud to the USB drive.

What specific problems are you having trying to setup the My Cloud on your local network? Have you read through the My Cloud User Manual (WD Documentation)? Have you read through the My Cloud Dashboard Help section? Have you read through the My Cloud Learning Center (http://mycloud.com/learn/?id=mycloud) or the WD Learning Center (http://setup.wd2go.com/index.php?mod=howTo&device=mc)?

The My Cloud can be setup using a web browser by accessing the My Cloud Dashboard.

Due to certain well known issues here in this subforum with certain (primarily AT&T Uverse) broadband provided routers one may have to connect their My cloud to a a switch, hub or second router and connect that equipment to the broadband provided router/gateway.

Well, if you’re committed to it, you can always just open the case (voiding the warranty) and plop the drive into a USB enclosure and you’re good to go. You’d need to redo the partitions and reformat, of course…
