Using as external Hard drive

I’m considering getting a Mac mini to use as my media centre in terms of downloading and plex for streaming as my wd just isn’t cut out to handle usenet (which is to be expected) but it would be ashame to waste it’s hard drive. I’ve tried setting it up to do everything on my Mac and then deposit the files onto the wdmycloud via SMB mount but post processing freezes it seems like get nzb and sabnzbd just can’t send the files which if the completed folder is only th macs local drive it’s done in a matter of seconds. So, my only option is to use the WD as an external Hard drive, plug it into the Mac and then it behaves like a local drive, no wifi and no mounting.

I know it seems like a waste but I don’t actually use what the WD was intended for as plex will serve me better and it would be an awful shame to buy a 3tb drive when there is one actually sitting there collecting dust.

So how can I do it? Is it possible? Thank you :))

check this link made sometime ago by Nazar78. See if it helps you. I never tried myself, when it bricks I might :slight_smile:

Technically - USB can be switched to “Client”… (Need make special usb-cross-cable)
Other option - Install DHCP-server on WDMC - that will allow to connect it directly to the computer without router/switch/hub/etc…

Also you can install alternative firmware. Its has more functional (PlexMediaServer too), but works slower (Like firmware v3)

You could probably test the “freeze” issue first by connecting mycloud directly to your Mac and assign static ip/gateway to the nic, see if it helps.

Else if you’re very sure on using it as a normal drive, remove the 3tb hdd from the mycloud then mount it in a cheap usb3 sata hdd enclosure to connect to the Mac.

Just ordered my Mac mini, do you think the freeze issue might be resolved if i mounted them as a nfs mount rather than an smb?  Also the mac mini and the wd will both by wired connection rather than wired and wifi.  Ideally i would just like for all the downloading and processing to be done on the mac and then transferred over to the WD for ease of use, but it when i tried this with the Macbook pro it would always freeze on the post processing part thats why i thought external was the way to go.

The static IP, do you think that could work?

" … remove the 3tb hdd from the mycloud…"

So the myCloud drive has a standard format ?

Just curious because my new myCloud replaces a Segate goflex whose SATA drive has a proprietary formatting so you cannot practicably replace the dead drive with an OEM…

@RyLeTo

I do not think mounting as NFS would make a difference, but you could try see if it helps. I suspect the files are being pushed to the NAS while it waits for the HOST to resolve, you could try mount it via static IP instead of HOST or hardcode the IP in your host file /private/etc/hosts.

@Nik_2213

I’m not sure about your “new myCloud”. But mine holds a normal SATA hdd, the WD RED drive (see my signature for the pic) which is in linux partitions. You could always partition and format it according to your needs on the new location if you were to remove the drive to use it elsewhere.

sorry for the delay in replying.

I tried creating a user and password on the WD, but still had the freezing issue on the transfer and unpack.  So next i tried mounting via afp rather than smb, then ofcourse logging in with the user i created and low and behold it works, albeit very slowly… a 5 gig file transfers and unpacks in about 40 minutes but this is over wifi.  When i do get my Mini (still waiting on delivery!) it will be connected via Ethernet, but i may try your suggestion of a direct connect and static ip!  That you so much for your help, it’s saved the WD from being salvaged haha!.

Sorry to drag this up but would it be 2.5 inch enclosures or 3.5 inch?
