"There is no media in the current folder" - error message

I purchased WD TV Live and WD ShareSpace 4TB network storage system.  They were successfuly connected on the same network and WD TV Live recognizes WD ShareSpace.  I am providing the admin username and password in WD TV Live to access the network storage.  Once WD TV Logs in it says “There is no media in the current folder”.  In fact I get this message if I try to access any network share from any of the computers on my network.  Not sure how to get around it.  It is very frustrating.  I would expect 2 WD products to work together at the least.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Check if you have any files that WD TV LIve can play directly in the root directory. A jpg or avi should do. Normally this message means the player does not see any content to play. BTW it does not navigate down a folder structure. (E xcept for DVD)

A PC or Network Share Device can have multiple shared folders.  If WDTV Live cannot browse folder, then which folder does WDTV live look into among the available shares on a device?  BTW, WD TV Live does browse folders on USB devices that are directly connected to its USB ports.

Hi

The only times I get  the “There is no media in the current folder” message is when trying to use “Media Servers” to access the PC from the WDTV live, this was sorted by using Tversity as suggested elsewhere on this forum.

Also If I access the PC through “Network Shares” on the WDTV I can Browse through the folder structure of any shared Drives or folders and only get the error message if there are no files supported by the WDTV Live i.e. DNG files in folders named DNG in My Photos, it sees the folder but cannot see the .DNG files as they are not supported,

However Tversity allows me to view these through the WDTV,

even when I am browsing folders for Video I can see music and picture files and when I press “Enter” on the remote it will play the music or display the photo even though I was browsing for video,

I did have a problem accessing network shares after the latest upgrade but found that this was due to me using 2 network cables from the PC to the router to solve a problem with “Grabit” crashing the network adapter,as soon as I removed the 2nd cable and restarted the WDTV it was OK (I have stopped using “Grabit” and have no issues with the network adapter now).

I have replicated this problem and as soon as the 2nd cable is connected the WDTV Live loses the network shares until I remove the cable and restart the WDTV

Overall I am very happy with my WDTV live as it has done everything I ask of it so far including playing large M2ts or MKV files over the network

Suddenly I get “no media” in network share, but Media Server is still OK,

    • *> Double check the following settings.  If you’re using Vista or W7, make sure you have Password Protected Folders turned off under Advanced Network Settings.

In XP/Vista/W7 Make sure your Guest account is turned off.  Verify you have the Everyone group with only Read access on the shared folders.

And, most important of all, on the WD TV Live under Network settings make sure Auto login to network share is turned On.  You’ll want to clear login info for network share too while you’re on that screen.

Reboot by hanking the power, waiting 15 seconds and plugging it back in.

Let me know if that works for you.

Back again after doing nothing, WD is permanently on.

Do you use any type of instant messenger on the PC where your shares are located?  If so, was that service off when it came back?

I’ve seen some correlation between instant messenger, MSN to be more specific, and WD not showing shares consistently.

I am user of Sharespace & WDTV Live.

What is the username & password you provide. If it is admin which is used to configure the sharespace, the same may not work to login to share. Try to remove password protection from share folder and just give access to all.

If you need password protection, create one.

Then, erase all login data in WDTV live and then login fresh and immediately enable remember login data.

Still if you have problem, enable Twonky media server in the Sharespace. This comes free with Sharespace. Configure the share and media server. This will be identified by WDTV live without any hassle. No password business here.

Enjoy.

In my experience, I got this message because the WDTV Live was could not connect using my existing password.  I had the network share set up correctly, and the WDTV looked like it would authenticate, however it would tell me that “There is no media in the current folder”, but of course there actually was.  I found that if I changed my password on my PC, and logged on from the WDTV with that new password, it would work.  Some passwords worked, and some did not.  For example, password “1” did not work, but password “1234” worked fine, and so did a blank password.  That is also why turning on Simple file Sharing makes it work… windows authenticates with the guest username and blank password when using simple file sharing.  But most people don’t want to open up that security hole, so try a different password.  It worked for me.

Is your network share set up so that there is no password?  I was getting the same exact error you are getting when I had my network share set up with no password and full guest access.  As soon as I set up a user name and password to be required for the share things just started working.

1 Add NAS user (for example WDTVLIVE with n/empty password)

2 Turn off auto access in network setup of WDTV

3 Go to the NAS as shared res.

4 enter user and password  (for example WDTVLIVE with n/empty password) and walk through share

5 return into WDTV network setup

6 Turn on auto access in network setup of WDTV

Great response. You seem to be the only who who actualy READ the problem. I came here with the same problem and as usual the last solution gets it right. Thank you.

thanks for great advise, i have the same problem after upgrading to the new version, it made me a whole day searching around to solve that and now it works like a charm

in the other hand, you don’t need to soft reset or hard reset the device after upgrading, just power off for minutes, then turn the WD Live on, enter network configuration and choose OFF ‘auto network login’ then, delete ‘login information’(just below). Now dig into the share folders on lan with administrator username, passwork blank, and voila everything has coming back :smileyvery-happy:

you should turn ON  ‘auto network login’ after the device get on lan.

Please help me,

Im still having a problem with this

Im using a my book world as a nas drive which has worked fine until now,

this is wired into my router

I can access and view all my media from my laptop but cant get my wdtv live to find and display it under Videos media server like it used to.

the media player is also wired into the router

Any idea’s anyone?

Windows XP

I had the same problem but then after looking at the permissions of the folders I realized that the WDLive was not being inherited to the files in the folder.

In a nutshell

Just go into User Accounts in Control Panel on your networked computer

Create a user name, give it limited access and then assign a password it. Remember the name and password.

Go to your WD box and under settings clear your login information turn Off auto login.

Go to file management and access your network share drive.

When prompted enter the user and password you just created on your computer.

Go back to network settings and turn back on the Auto Log In.

Now when you share a folder on your network computer it will show up on the WDTV

Also to save time if all your music is MP3 you can play from Music Files or Movie Files :slight_smile:

Log onto your sharespace go to advanced and change your password. Swithch on your wd live media player in settings deselect auto log on then reboot wd live. Switch all back on and enter new password when propted on your tv or cinema. It should now work. Go back to wd live and select auto login and reboot and all should be well this is nothing to do with twonky as you all looking at system shares not media server. There are times when it’s best with wd live to use shares not media server such as when you have 100 episodes of a series on your hard drives. Most computer people don’t get this. Hope this helps

This has nothing to do with what version of windows or mac it’s to do with the two wd products. Most of time you are problaly using tv or cinema to view

I can only tell you my scope of the same problem.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE STILL NOT WORKING

************************************

I have 2 servers 1 domain and 10 workstations in my home.

They are all joined to the domain.  My problem was I was providing a domain login.

I used  wdplayer as the user and 123 as the password.

I tried

U=wdplayer

and

U=housedomain\wdplayer

Neither worked.

I added a user LOCALLY on the workstation.

U=wdlocal

P=123

I input that into my player and it got access to the network shares no problem at all.

I can completely browse them and also access multiple shares on one system.

Hope this helps.
