SMART data looking bad for a one year old WD Black Drive?

Look at the reassigned sector count at over 5000 for a 6TB drive! Should I RMA this drive? It’s barely a year old since it was purchased (October 2023).

The “Drive Health” says Normal, though.

Run the Extended SMART test?

Thanks!

Just did.

Your drive is very sick, but its health is reported as “normal” because no attribute’s Worst or Current value has fallen below the Threshold.

Will reformatting do anything? Support is requesting me to reformat.

That would be pointless. Reallocated sectors are those that have gone bad and have subsequently been replaced with spares. When you format the drive, you will be writing to the new spares, not the original bad sectors. The only thing that formatting may do, assuming it’s a full format, is cause the drive to replace any sectors that are pending reallocation. These are sectors which have been identified as bad by the drive. The drive is now waiting for a signal from the OS (ie a Write command) that will allow it to replace these pending sectors with spares.

Thanks, I’m going to request an Advance Warranty Replacement so I can copy off the old data.
