Replace WDShareSpace (RMA) what about my data (Raid 5)

Hi,

My WDShareSpace is not working correctly. WD advised me to file an RMA. So, I did.

Mow I have one question. Will all my data be lost on my 4 disk Raid 5 setup if I move the drives to the new cabinet?

Thanks,

Albertv

If you don’t swap the drives one at a time and let the SS rebuild each time then yes, you’re likely to lose it.

Next time try to backup your data, RAID is NOT a backup, just a method to add fault tolerance to drive failure. Remember never to trust your important data to just one single device, no matter who is to make it.

Hi,

My drives are not broken, the cabinet is.

I have to move all the drives over to the new cabinet together.

The problem I have is that the configuration website does not work. Western Digital’s advice is to replace the cabinet and move the old disks over to the new cabinet.

Is the Linux system that runs the configuration web-site installed on the drives, than this should not make any difference because I expect a software problem. If the drives boot from a flash memory, than swapping the cabinet would be a good idea.

I tried ftp, telnet, SSH to access my data. No success. I saw a lot of discussions about installing the drives in a windows PC and use special RAID software to access them. Does anybody have a success story on doing this?

I would prefer Windows as I have no expertise/experience with Linux .

Thanks,

Albert
