Repeated "connection failed" message on a mac

macbook pro (2019) running macos 10.15.5.
wireless pro firmware up to date.
drive shows up as a wireless network, shows up in mywd dashboard, all lights blinking blue etc.

when i try to connect to the drive through the finder, i get a “connection failed” message in the window. repeatedly.
