Remote Backup Help Requested!

Hello,  I need assitance setting up a remote backup between two EX4 units - each at a separate location.  One is at my office, and the other one is at home.  I want to backup my work files to the home drive.

I have read many different solutions on forums and precisely followed the instructions from the knowledge base:  http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11807/~/how-to-create-a-remote-backup-on-a-wd-my-cloud-mirror%2C-ex2-or-ex4-drive

I have not been able to get the source drive to see the destination drive.  (Both of the drives do show up on the MyCloud apps, I can see and access the shares.)

When following the instructions in the knowledge base article, I choose WD My cloud in the Remote Server field for the information to be entered automatically.  An error always shows up regarding inablility to find a destination drive.  I’ve also tried the NAS Server setup, but same problem.

My router does support uPnP and ports are set to 80 and 443 - as recommended in support forums.

I’d like to utilize the included means to set up the remote backup.  I don’t want to have external applications, FTP or the like as others have suggested.  There’s got to be a way to make the built in remote app settings to get the job done.

I’d really like more detailed instructions, or for support to contact me.  Thanks everyone for your help in advance!

Hello there,

When you create a remote backup job you should be able to use either the public IP of the location of the other device, or your WD MyCloud username and password.

I suggest contacting WD support for further assistance on this matter:

Thanks for your reply. Yes. I have tried both IP address and username/password setup options. Neither work. When I try the IP setup option (NAS Server) I get an rsync ssh error. When I try the Username/password option (wdmycloud) the destination drive does not show up in the window of available drives. The remote drive does not show up. The support articles and instructions seem to be missing something. Maybe the port numbers are incorrect? Has anyone successfully gotten this to work by following the provided instructions? Does any one have a hunch? (I’m happy to contact support but wouldn’t mind the input of the community.). Thanks!

Okay.  I figured it out.  The instructions in the prior link I provided are correct, but I think could add a little extra detail to clarify ambiguous references to “IP address.”  I’m sure others have had the same issue.  It seems the manual interchangeably uses “IP address” to mean local IP address (IPv4) or external IP address.  Of course, for remote backups, the relevant remote drive IP address is the external IP address.  Once I inserted the remote IP address of the remote drive, the process worked simply and easily.

I hope that helps everyone in the same situation - and assists WD pros to understand where the hiccup occurs in the documentation.  Thanks again.
