MyCloud to MyCloud Backup same network

So I’m a new IT guy and here at the company they have a Network drive attached to the server and it’s almost full. There is so much critical and important data where we cannot afford to lose, the Network Administrators have being warned but they haven’t done anything. I bought 2 of MyClouds of 4TB each, and I pluged them into our nework via ethernet cable. One of them is meant to be used for storage and the other one for backup. I tried to create a Remote Backup, but it’s gviing me errors. If anyone has an idea i will defenenately appreciate it!! I set both fo the WDs with Statis IP address but the problem is where I trired to click on the Destination Folder it tells me “Invalid Remote Backup Password. Try again.” I turned the SSH on (on the WD i’m using as backup) and i also added a password, but it keeps giving me that error message.

Have you given them different names?

Can you access both devices on the network?
Have you set them up appropriately?

Have you read the user manual…?

The basic MyClouds are consumer devices. Depends on the size of your business, but the more ‘industrial’ devices in the range may be better suited to commercial use.

yeah they both have different names, and yes I can access them in the network. I did a “manual” backup by copying all data from the main WD to the BackupWD and it worked, it’s just the issue seting up the “Remote Backup”. As far as the manual, i’ve been reading sereral manuals and articles, but some of them ask me to change the Port Forwarding, i’m not really familiar with that so i might have to ready and learn more about this before attempting to set my Remote Backup server

Are both My Cloud’s of the same firmware version? In other words both v4.x or both v2.x firmware?

You do not need to do port forwarding so long as both My Clouds are on the same local network.

See Chapter 10 in the WD My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25) for more information on how to perform a Safepoint / Backup from one My Cloud to another local network location like a My Cloud.

Well thanks so much for replying, i reall apreciate it, but this is not working. I tried to do the Safepoint, but maybe the version i have it’s not capable to do this because, i dont’ see the
Safepoint icon, i only see the Apps icon then i click and it gives me HTTP Downloads and Safepoint Migration option only, Then, i finally see Mycloud and when i click it tells me that “there was not safepoints found”… does that mean i have to create a safepoint first in other to retrieve it?

Perhaps we’d better establish exactly which devices you have got…

Are they white?
Are they quite narrow?
What version firmware are they running (see the Dashboard homepage).
Does the Dashboard homepage look like that on

p30 of
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705103.pdf (Gen1)

or p31 of
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705147.pdf (Gen2)

If the latter, the Safepoint has been renamed ‘Backup’. A more sensible name, after all…

I see that Bennor asked the same question. If you answer these questions, we might better be able to help…

Yeah they are the little white, narrow ones, they’re 4tb each and they both have the 2.11.140 Firmware

Read the relevant ‘Gen2’ user manual then, and hit the ‘Backup’ button, as that’s what the function appears to be called on the Gen2 devices.

so, i tried to start all over again. For the backup WD I assigned its own IP Address, Static, then I created a password for the SSH. On my Main WD where We’re going to have all the data I clicked on “Backup” then I clicked on the Remote Backup, I filled all of the fields: Job Name, Remote Server (NAS Server), IP Address, Password, SSH User Name (sshd), SSH Password, Source Folder (Main WD folder), Destination Folder !! this is where i have the problem when i click the “Browse” button and it says “Invalid Remote Backup Password, try again” I tried to reset and change the backup WD password but nothing works! I even tried to have different Passwords for each.

What did you select for the Remote Server selection entry?

Make sure to turn on SSH on the second My Cloud that will be the target backup location.
Make sure the remote server setting is turned On in the remote My Cloud.
Make sure the backup password for the remote My Cloud is enabled

i selected that option “Remote Backups” and i selected the NAS

What other options are available for that option other than NAS Server?

Edit to add: Just noticed your second post with screen captures. What SSH login name are you using? It appears your using “sshd”. Is that a “User” name? Have you tried using the default My Cloud SSH login user name and password? Under v4.x firmware there is only one SSH login name and password (root/welc0me).

the other option for the Remote Backup is “My Cloud” but that one asks me for the email and password, but that’s another issue, becasue it woudn’t let me create an email for the WD.
The “sshd” is by default and cannot be removed, all you can do is type a password or leave it blank, but the SSH user name is there by default and cannot be removed or edit.
Also, I realized somthing new. When I try to create the job and if I leave the default password for SSH, it gives me a different error message

any updates to this situation yet? I’m also faced with the same issue (MyCloud to MyCloud inside our network, NO external cloud access), where the admin password used isn’t the “password” asked inside Remote Backup option under IP, and there’s no place to set the password.

Called Customer Support, who said there should be an option inside Settings-Network, but the entire section has disappeared (he said it’s above Port Forwarding) and not in my WD. Our firmware is the newest 2.21.126

*I should note the customer support said they have to escalate it up to level 3 support who would call us back, but haven’t heard back anything for several days now…

What My Cloud firmware version is each My Cloud running?

Unfortunately one cannot use a v2.x version single bay My Cloud as a destination backup for another v2.x single bay My Cloud because the single bay v2.x firmware doesn’t include the Remote Backup Server option. See the following WD Support document for more information:

Hi Bennor, thanks for your insight, and unfortunately the situation fits exactly the v2.x single bay My Cloud.

IMO, what a bunch of nonsense by WD. There’s really no good reason other than corporate BS to artificially “differentiate” their products and force anyone to pony up more money to buy higher priced machines they don’t need if they want remote backup.

I loved WD’s HDDs (other than select cheap junks they started producing after acquiring factories), but my experience with WD’s My Cloud just seems to have taken a nose dive.

He guys,
Funny (NOT) to see that combining two single bays with similar firmware in one network does not work.
Makes you wonder why.

However, the posed solution of using the External back-up function doesn’t work either. I can really not imagine that I need to download a prog to install on my desktop that simply orders to sync both single bays.

When i try to use the external backup function, i continiously get this error saying my backup password is not not valid.
I use capital, regular, numbers and special characters in teh password.

What am i doing wrong guys?

This is really starting to annoy me. I just want a daily like for like sync between 2 single bays withput any intervention of a desktop or laptop computer. Can I do this or not?

Specs:
2 pc My Cloud 4TB
both firmware 2.30.165
both one the same network

Hope to hear from others that hopefully solved this problem.

Officially you cannot backup from one v2.x single bay My Cloud to another v2.x single bay My Cloud.

https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=16772

Only the multi bay My Cloud units support being a remote backup target.

Yes it’s stupid that WD took away the ability to backup from one single bay v2.x My Cloud to another v2.x single bay My Cloud when they released the v2.x single bay My Cloud units almost two years ago, but that’s what they’ve done. If one uses the forum search feature, magnifying glass icon upper right, they’d find this is a common discussed complaint going back almost two years. So far WD refuses to fix the issue.

Unofficially one may be able to use Rsync to backup. There has been past discussion on using Rsync that can be found using the forum search feature.

You can enable remote backup feature through removing the visible:none on Settings pane.

Functionality of remote backup isn’t removed on single bay drives but just hid by Western Digital.
