Remote backup and ability to get remote device IP from My Cloud

I am creating a new topic in this category, as another user pointed out that the category in which I initially posted the issue was for Single Bay NAS devices designed for Home Use. As a result, I am reposting the issue here, creating a new topic.

I have two WD My Cloud EX Ultra Devices and I have set them up so that one of them backs up folders from the other one (using the Remote Backups application).

The two devices are not on the same LAN (they are physically in different cities) and they both run My Cloud OS5 and their firmware version is 5.09.115.

The destination NAS device is on a network that does not have static internet (public) IP, so the public IP there keeps changing from time to time.

The instructions on WD website to setup the remote backup clearly state that there should be an option while setting up the backup job on the source NAS to obtain the IP address of the destination NAS using information in the My Cloud account (as the public IP address NAS of any NAS registered on a My Cloud account is communicated to WD servers). As per the instructions, this option should be available on the Remote backup Job configuration screen and labelled “Remote Server”.

Nonetheless and while this option is shown on the screenshots in the WD setup instructions, it is nowhere to be found on my respective source NAS configuration screen. It is just missing…!

Note that I have send the above message to the WD support team, only to receive very generic replies and links to online Articles and Answers that I had already thoroughly reviewed before contacting anyone. The most upsetting thing is that the information provided by the WD support representative was contradicting. I am extremely disappointed, not that much because I did not get a solution, but because the WD support representative seems to be unable to even understand the issue…!

Can you point out the section and screenshot in the article that you’re referencing?

A My Cloud will have no knowledge of the other devices IP address be it on the same LAN or via WAN.
The only way to get the destination of the NAS across the WAN is to check the router or if your computer is on the same network open a web browser to https://whatismyipaddress.com/

Hello SBrown,

The article may be found following the link: How to Use Remote Backups for My Cloud OS 5

If you then scroll down and click on the link “Step C1”, you should be able to see the screenshot number 5 (remote backup window). On the second drop down option in this window, users should be able to point to their MyCloud account and select a NAS from there. The selected NAS public IP should be automatically replicated for the backup procedure (according to the instructions). Nonetheless, this option seems to be missing in the relevant window in the remote backup app of OS5.

Note that I have managed to setup backup procedures using statically defined IPs. This is quite straight forward and not an issue. What is required though is for this option to be made available, so that the destination NAS public IP address is obtained automatically during the backup process, as in my case it is not static.

@george.oratis Thanks for the detailed information.
You are correct regarding the NAS and MyCloud drop down menu has been removed for My Cloud OS 5.
We will get that KBA corrected ASAP!!

Hello again SBrown,

Am I correct to understand that this option will not be made available in OS5, but instead you will be updating the related Article / Answer to remove this option all together? Can you not instead of updating the Article / Answer, just add the option for OS5 as well? :slightly_smiling_face:

It seems that a lot of users on this forum strongly believe that OS5 is in many ways a downgrade from OS3! I shall be adding myself to this group after this experience…
