Remote access down fairly often

I bought and set up two EX2 Ultras, one for home and one for church office, basically as backup, with remote access an added benefit on the rare occasion I wanted to access either home or church files from elsewhere. Now during Covid time I’m working mostly from home and using the remote access for the church device fairly often. But I’m finding it down and not working fairly often. I am 99% sure it is a WD network/server/website issue, because it works most of the time. However, the half dozen times I’ve gotten a blank page or a useless can’t connect page asking me to troubleshoot stuff on my end (not the problem) have been pretty annoying. Why can’t WD just acknowledge and give actual notice of the fact that its remote access service is experiencing problems? Does anyone know of an alternative way to set up these devices for remote access, not going through the WD My Cloud web interface? Thanks.

I’ll answer my own question and say that a Google search suggests that WebDAV seems to be a good alternative to the My Cloud web site for remote access. It does look intimidating to this guy who is no networking guru, what with needing to open a port in the router, etc. However, I’m going to tackle it this week and shame on WD for making it necessary. Next time I will go with a Synology product since I’m having to do all that complicated stuff anyway. I also notice there’s been no comment from WD staff on this. They are simply missing in action when it comes to handling the increased need for remote access during this time.

I also note that what I mean by giving “actual notice” of their remote access problems is something other than the totally bogus “Service Status” page which only covers My Cloud Home and OS3 and always shows everything is hunky dory, even when it’s not. Again, they just don’t seem to care.

“Service Status” page is worthless, regardless of which device it applies to. There are numerous outages that don’t show up on the Service Status page.

Have you tried setting up WebDAV? Which tools etc. have you used?
