I have the same problem with the one that posted the message and I did everything…followed all the instructions and other suggestions like formatting to fat32 or fat but still the firmware update icon does not appear…I am referring to a first generation wd hd player…suggestions to resolve this is very much appreciated
Well, actually, I’ve never had to try finding the “Update” option in the settings, and if the right files aren’t found, the option won’t show up.
If the drive connected to the WDTV has the proper update files for that model in the root directory, and if the update files are for a newer version than what’s installed, then when the WDTV boots, before it even gets to the menus, it tells me that there’s new firmware detected and asks if I would like to install it.
Double-check what current firmware your device has, and that the update you’re trying is for your device and is newer than what’s already there. The firmware for a Gen1 won’t be detected (and can’t be installed) on a Gen2, and vice versa.
thanks for the fast response…actually last week i bought at ebay a wd hd tv and updated the firmware to the latest version…no problem with it…was so amazed with the features with the searching by cover art…thus bought again for my room…but now i think this is an old version because the firmware is version 0.02.17…i am assuming this is a first generation media player, because the firmware for the 2nd generation does not detect…tried the version 1.03 but still no firmware upgrade icon appears…followed the published steps in the WD website but to no avail…ANY SUGGESTIONS please…thanks…I am not really very good with this kind of thing so any suggestion is a great help…
Look on the actual device itself.
There should be a sticker with tiny printing and a barcode on the side of the unit.
If the sticker says something like WD P/N WD00AVN-00 then it is a Gen1 and the last firmware update is 1.03.01
http://support.wdc.com/download/wdtv/WDTV_1_03_01.zip
If the sticker says something like WD P/N WDBABF0000NBK-00 then it is a Gen2 and the last firmware update is 1.01.77
http://download.wdc.com/wdtv/WDTV_1.01.77.zip
If it’s a Gen 1, try re-downloading the 1.03.01.zip file from the link above and unzip it to the USB drive that you will connect to the WDTV, overwriting any previous files.
The correct update should be automatically detected when that drive is then connected to the WDTV.
thank you really for your help but still the firmware upgrade icon does not appear…tried two separate usb…one for version 1 and one for version 2…just to make sure but both updates does not appear…i guess something wrong with the media player…but it does know or detect there is a usb and the player does do its purpose of playing movies without the update…of course the update would have been best so that I can search using the movie cover arts etc…if you guys have any other suggestion I am glad to try it…again thank you very much…
One more suggestion…
When you turn the WDTV on, go to the “Settings” menu and choose “System” and then click “About”
What version comes up?
