I just bought my WD HD TV media player about 20 days ago when there was PC Fair in my country. After using it for awhile, i realized this mediaplayer unable to play certain video format (e.g: .flv). So i look into this website and find out that my HD TV media player is Gen 1 type (does it matter?).
Since this is my first time registering my product online, i was also stumble upon one link to update firmware for my product. After downloaded it, when i tried to update, there was no option for UPDATE in my SETTING. Why is that so? I do not understand. I browsed every category in its menu. But no. The only firmware version my product has is 1.01.79.
so how am I going to update my firmware?
I am so confused right now.
Can someone tell me what is wrong with my media player?
i tried to update my WD HD Media player… downloaded the proper file and uploaded it to the unit successfully and when the unit rebooted itself…it never came back. the “upgrade” from Western Digital killed my media player. My player was awesome and played almost everything very well…but I made a HUGE mistake by trying to stay current with the newest firmware for my player.
What the hell is this for a heck…??? I bought a Gen 1 last month. The warranty still runs until 11/2011. How can WD stop the support for a hardware still under warranty? For a complete scam.
I am looking at getting one, as I need something to handle all the data from 9 USB drives, from 500GB up to 1.5TB’s
so I can reduce my footprint, from a electricity standpoint. Since those Marvell 800Mhz CPU’s run very energy efficient, it seems like the best idea.
I am wondering if you use yours in RAID 1, RAID 0, and if neither, which RAID function do you use?
My reasons are simple. I have built many PC’s, and even have one Custom built MAC OS X 10.7 (server) with 4TB of space on it. I’m looking to put the DATA drives, from that into, a QNAP-410
Thanks,
Dagra
PS. I have a WDTV(Gen 1) which I hadn’t used in over a year, as I was waiting for better firmware. I put the two files on a 2GB USB stick, and it started the update process from there.
To all else, [with update issues for Gen 1 firmware] go here:
Thanks anyway I just ordered a QNAP 419P, and will use that till next year, this will let me gift several of the USB drives to family & friends I see without backup or multimedia space. This will be way better then the Mac server box, in wattage use by a large amount, decreasing my footprint.
Yes you are right. Was wrong in my last posting (not last month… was last year… 11/2009). But nevertheles…, it is unsupportable that WD stops the firmware updates during warranty. And this i what I call a scam. Jm2c…
I’d wonder why the retailer continued to sell them almost a year after they stopped being made.
Other than the obvious eBay and other re-sales, you can _ still _ find the occasional Gen1 for sale.
But yes, they were still on shelves long after production stopped. They were still on some shelves (even big box stores like BestBuy) when _ support _ ended.
And pretty much right up until WD announced EOL (and even afterwards in some cases), WD Tech Support was still promising the “next firmware fix” for the Gen1. That’s partially a result of outsourcing, and TEch Support not knowing what WD truly had planned, but consumers who didn’t do much research do have a right to feel “WTF???” about the EOLing even if the lack of research or attention to detail is their own fault . It’s just natural to assume that if it still appears to be a top-line item in the store, there’d be support for it once you got it home. And other than the model number on the sticker on the bottom, and the lack of the “DTS” logo on the side of the box, there was very little to tell a consumer whether they were buying a Gen1 or a Gen2, especially if they were jumbled together on the shelf.
Most consumers seemed to not even know there were 2 versions until they were wondering why DTS wasn’t getting downmixed once they got their box home and were using it. They saw on the WD website about the device supporting DTS in the sepcs, went off to the store, bought a “WDTV HD” off the shelf, and didn’t know they were grabbing old stock that the retailer was trying to clear out.
Of course, BestBuy is good at that – trying to get rid of old stock. I went in looking for an Acer x183h. They had several “open box” models on the shelves, marked down to $139.99 from $149.99. The problem is, that when they negotiated their next batch of purchasing, they got a better deal. The price for a new one was now $129.99 instead of $149.99. So where were all the $129 ones? Hidden behind other monitors on other shelves. Not one out in the open. You weren’t quite forced to buy one of the open box ones for $10 more, but it was close.
