Two Macs to back up at home. For years I had two different shares on my EX4100, one for each machine. That wasn’t strictly necessary, of course, but I figured it was good for compartmentalization, and corruption of one wouldn’t impact the other. (And yes, I keep separate backups and local disks, rotating occasionally to off-site storage. Belt, suspenders, and duct tape.)
A month or so ago I realized that the NAS firmware was pretty old, 14.something from mid 2021, so I upgraded to 5.25.132.
I immediately started having trouble with TimeMachine. One computer would seem to be doing fine, but the other would maybe work once, then I’d start getting errors along the line of “This disk doesn’t support the necessary functions.” Or, despite distinct login credentials, one machine could only see the share supposedly meant for the other, not the one for it.
I’d delete the misbehaving share and recreate it, and that computer/share combo would work, but the other would break.
I finally thought “What if…,” bit the bullet, and created one share and set both to use it. Since then everything has worked as intended. The only issue now is, I can’t independently control the maximum size backups of the two computers.
So, unless I’m missing something, two TimeMachine shares used to work. Now they don’t. Was this documented somewhere?
