No Cloud Functionality

I Bought a 3TB WD Drive about three months ago. - I have never been able to get it to work.

There were no instructions with the device - simply a card with a web url on it, - this web url was 404 and unreachable.

I have corresponded with WD and received little help really, - The instructions received all tell me to upgrade the firmware by using a link in the control panel, - however…

I cannot access the control panel. (this was pointed out in my correspondence).

I have found the link to the setup program using google and the WD website but when I run it it simply stalls and tells me I have no communication with the device, - so … NO control panel and no way to upgrade firmware as far as I can ascertain. ( http://i.imgur.com/CCZHE0Y.jpg )

The device is visible on my network and appears as a “WDCLOUD” icon - I can write to the drive and read from it but cannot access it through my browser.

I`ve tried the “pin” hard reset and it is resolutely the same.

Ive tried disabling my firewall and anti virus, Ive also tried uninstalling the same. - no change.

There is a blue light on the front panel. - When I try to access the device using the web/server url " http://192.168.1.8/" I see a blank page and a “can’t establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.8.” message.

My question is a simple one - Is this drive faulty and is there ANYTHING I can do to get it to work?

I cannot just take it back for replacement now because of the amount of time that has passed - ( the replies from WD were all missed at first because they were lost in my Email SPAM folders, the receipt is lost and the replies I`ve received all make the assumption that I can access this “control panel”).

any help?

do you have a static IP? Or DHCP? if DHCP set it static once you can get in

what is the status of the front LED and the 2 by the Ethernet cable?

how did you determin the 192.168.1.8 IP address below? Assuming it is correct the URL would be http://192.168.1.8/UI. does this work? If you are not using a static IP sign into your router to get the IP of the mycloud

when you click on the WDCLOUD icon what do you get?

in file explorer enter \192.168.1.8 in the address bar. What do you get?

in a command prompt ping 192.168.1.8. what do you get?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

ok - not sure about the IP - I THINK it is static, - its a BT infinity IP if that helps.

the LED is blue and the router LED`s are green.

the 192.168.1.8 address is the IP address I see in the browser address window when I click the wdcloud icon in windows 8. - I assume this is the IP address of the devices server,- ( - I have several PC`s with both win 8.1 Pro , windows 7 and Linux mint 17, - if I click the icon in win 8 it opens a browser window and displays a blank page and error message yet in windows 7 doing the same thing opens an explorer window and I see the drives folders - which I can read and write to.)

in windows 8 if I just click the icon I get the browser window but if I Open it from the menu - I get the explorer window and see the fies in the drive. - In linux - there are two wmcloud icons - one is inoperative and the other opens the drive directory.

if I enter the address directly I get the blank page and error message.

if I ping it I receive a reply - (4 packets sent and received in the stats).

Edit:- The Router displays the same IP address 192.168.1.8

Bump.

its now a year later and I STILL haven`t got this infernal device to function. - or heard any more here.

I`m suprised me to see this thread still exists here actually.

Problem is still as above. any help please?

some screen grabs:-

(these are from the setup file downloaded from right clicking the network icon - “download software”)

The problem is exactly the same on all my PC`s running win 7 , win 8 and Linux (see original post).

I did try contacting support but after finding the initial messages (in my spam folder) I heard nothing more, this was months ago. The initial advice was to “turn it off and on again” basically and advised me to check some settings in my control panel. ( I couldnt because I cant even SEE my control panel). I was also advised me to update my firmware (not possible as I cant access the control panel).

Kinda bad that this device has never worked since new, I would have returned it but so much times passed now that the receipts have gone awol and are lost.

http://192.168.1.8/UI. doesn`t work).

Did you use the installer?

Best read the quick start guide and the manual here

And read about the online installer or setup installer.

Cehck your router manual on how to setup a static IP address (also referred to as DHCP reservation) and go here as well

Then go here

and here

Download setup software here

There seems to be conflicting information posted:

(these are from the setup file downloaded from right clicking the network icon - “download software”)

http://i.imgur.com/OZQzNBO.jpg -> This is a picture of a My Book Live setup … not a My Cloud

http://i.imgur.com/0ysq1P2.jpg    -> Again a My Book … Not a My Cloud

http://i.imgur.com/RVPVrRx.jpg -> Same as above

http://i.imgur.com/JZ24eHx.jpg -> Ping is 192.168.1.3 and you mentioned 192.168.1.8 is the IP … wrong IP

http://i.imgur.com/5uO0s50.jpg -> This shows a My Cloud … not a My Book Live

http://i.imgur.com/1jOWag4.jpg -> Again IP 192.168.1.3 not 192.168.1.8

What does your router state is the IP of either a My Cloud or My Book Live ?

its the right one, downloaded from the wd site today under MyClouds setup download for the drive.

The download link is accessed by right clicking the drive icon in networks which sends you to the wd site where I entered my O/S and drive specs.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=904&sid=207&lang=en

the first address 192. 168. 1. 8 is the address that displayed in the browser last year and when I first tried to set this up but I`ve re-installed windows and other peripherals since then. 192. 168. 1. 3 is the correct address now and is whats displayed in the browser when it tries to access the device - thats why I tried pinging it.

The setup software and the screens shown are identical to what I remember from last time.

edit:- same address in router.

sign into your router to be sure what the current IP address is.

what is the status of the fron LED and the 2 rear LEDs?

ping IPAddress

in a browser enter http://IPAddress/UI

in file explorer enter \IPAddress

what happens with each of these?

Edit:

In you message above you have spaces in the IP address, it need to be only numbers and periods 192.168.1.xxx

the first link http://IPAddress/UI returns 404 (192.168.1.3)

http://i.imgur.com/F6i7a7L.jpg

the second (in explorer) returns the directories in the drive.

this is from the router:- (Netgear WDNR3700v4) all l.e.d`s are normal both on that and the modem.

thanks for helping.

also - I entered spaces because the forum here deleted my first post saying it contained http - the address was entered ok

I was looking for the LED status on the mycould. I stiil want these but it dosn’t seem to be an issue at this point

has the drive ever worked? have you created users and shares?

is it just remote and UI issues? or local issues as well?

I would start with a 40 second / system only restore. it won’t delete data and shares but everything else is reset like new. unplug the drive, press and hold the rear reset button as you apply power, continue to hold for 40 seconds. Don’t do anything with the drive until after the front LED is solid blue and i would suggest waiting a couple of hours or longer if you have a lot of data on it before going back into the UI

you need to recheck the IP after this as it might of changed

yeah Ive done all that (several times) and waited a day before trying again as that was suggested to me briefly in conversation with a friend (waiting). the status is blue on the actual WD drive, the two rear leds are green top one flashing , bottom one solid, I`ve mapped the drive to Z drive and its fine in explorer and yes users created.

No its never worked as a cloud drive - I`ve just been storing music files on it as a (slow) backup since Ive had no luck getting it to function correctly.

The problem seems to be me not seeing the actual drives firmware / operating system.

I`m wondering why the address pings ok in a C: prompt yet is 404 in a browser?

I don’t understand. You have been storing music on it? So you can access it from your PC?

Why do you want to see the drive’s firmware/OS? Or did you mean the Dashboard?

Silly question: have you read the user manual? I only ask because it’s evident from many Qs here that many people haven’t. Not that unreasonable, since no manual is supplied with the thing, and there isn’t a sticky thread saying ‘have you read the manual [link]’.

I`m wondering why the address pings ok in a C: prompt yet is 404 in a browser?

What other devices do you have on your network? Could you be getting pings from them?

How have you determined the MyCloud’s IP address? (Clue: look at your router: don’t rely on previous values)

Yes, as Ive already posted here:- (initial post…coff coff lol)

"The device is visible on my network and appears as a “WDCLOUD” icon - I can write to the drive and read from it but cannot access it through my browser.

I`ve tried the “pin” hard reset and it is resolutely the same.

there`s actually a screen grab OF my router showiung its IP here too.

and no - I cannot see the dashboard.

yes I`ve read the user manual and the section on troubleshooting directs me here to the WD site…

I think at this point I would start with some basics.

What OS are you running? Maybe you already answered that.

I would shutdown and then unplug your My Cloud from the router … then unplug your router … wait 10 minutes or so and then Re-Boot your router … wait until it is fully rebooted. Plugin the cable of the My Cloud into the router … Then plugin the power to the My Cloud … wait for the Blue light on the front to be solid blue.

Goto the router control panel and see what the IP is for the My Cloud. Use your Browser and type in the IP as follows:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/UI/

Your Dashboard should appear. If it does then the My Cloud is setup for your network, at that point it is your PC’s OS that is the issue. If not then it is the My Cloud.

I’m not sure what you are trying to do … Map a Share? You already mentioned that you have stored files on the My Cloud. Was this before or after you re-installed your PC’s OS?

As much info as you can post will help us all to help you.

ok the operating system(s) are:-

windows 7 premium 64 bit

windows vista 32 bit home

and two PC`s both running windows 8.1 (pro and home editions 64 bit)

& I`ve done all that several times… (turned power off/unplugged , held in the pin reset switch , waited 40 seconds and powered up - THEN re-ran the setup) and waited a long time for it to poll/setup, with no change bar the address as discussed in this thread.

the router is a Netgear WNDR3700v4 :- heres the screen grab again:-

http://i.imgur.com/5JdIcil.jpg

this is what I see when I double click the icon (it opens in a browser and I get a 404)

http://i.imgur.com/1jOWag4.jpg

This is what I see in explorer when I look at my network:-

http://i.imgur.com/5uO0s50.jpg

if I rightclick the bottom MyWDcloud icon and open it using the context menu it opens in explorer and I see the file structure/directories. But if I just double click the same icon it opens in a browser (icedragon) with a 404, (as in the first grab).

so I can read and write to it on my network but cannot access the devices IP or dashboard or setup etc in a browser - i.e its cloud functionality.

at the moment its just functioning as a drive but I cannot use it to access files from away from home using an internet connection on another PC or an app in a phone. (which is what I bought it for).

edit :- & its the same on all PCs - The network is as per the screen grab - just the PC`s plus two ipads and two phones on wifi and their addresses are different in the router.

You already mentioned that you have stored files on the My Cloud. Was this before or after you re-installed your PC’s OS?”

Both, its always been visible in explorer before and after reinstalling and its the same on several different PCs so dont really think its windows itself, also tried uninstalling the antivirus and disabling the firewall in case thats blocking it.

Have you tried to clear the credentials on Windows 7 and Vista? If old logins were kept and credentails stored then this might help.

for Windows 8 … look at this

Thanks I`ll look that over and report back tomorrow, bedtime now (UK time).

Thank you for your assistance.

Just to be absolutely sure: is that router screen grab current, or old? DHCP will reassign IP addresses. I note you mention four PCs, two iPads and two phones, but I only see two PC-like entries in your router’s IP table. Again, obvious question: have you tried a different router port?

If you go to Safari on one of the iPads and enter 192.168.1.3/UI in the address bar, what happens?

yes I`ve read the user manual and the section on troubleshooting directs me here to the WD site…

Yes, product support on the cheap: get your customers to support each other… Maybe it’s time to get WD to do some actual support for their product:

Going back to your earlier posts. SectorGZ asked you why your images were for MyBook Live setups. I don’t see an obvious reply.

What tool did you use to set go your device?

What device do you have? A MyCloud (white), or a MyBook Live (black)?

Sorry to be so blunt, but your posts are confusing me. The setup program for a MyCloud says ‘MyCloud’. It does not say ‘MyBook Live’, or show images of the MyBook Live.

MyCloud software is available here:

Yeah,I did state that the setup.exe is the one from the WD site on this link:-

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=904&sid=207&lang=en

its accessed by selecting the MyWDcloud drive and specs from the wd support page..and thats whats displayed on THAT setup file when its run.

http://i.imgur.com/SQpYyjX.jpg )

“Just to be absolutely sure: is that router screen grab current?”

Yes - taken yesterday.

“If you go to Safari on one of the iPads and enter 192.168.1.3/UI in the address bar, what happens?”

Exactly the same, 404.

“What device do you have? A MyCloud (white), or a MyBook Live (black)?”

MyCloud (white). 3TB

( I do actually have both but the black mybook drive is just an external drive and connected via USB to the windows 7 machine).

(Dont worry about being blunt, direct is always a good approach & Im grateful for your help).

The ipads and 1 laptop are not in the screengrab I posted because they are lower down on the same screen working on wi-fi, the ones displayed are the wired or ethernet connections including the myWDCloud drive & the IP addresses ARE different on all of them , there seems to be no conflict if this is what you are looking for.

I HAVE actually run both the setup from MY link and from yours both (supposedly) being FOR Mycloud, if the one I downloaded has MyBook displayed then I think it`s in the wrong place as I definitely selected the Cloud drive setup & NOT the mybook setup.

This is what I see when running the setup from YOUR link:-

http://i.imgur.com/iSpVJU3.jpg

i.e. its not booting into the devices operating system or the address is not accessible, I tend to think its the actual device. This is what I saw when i first tried to set the device up after downloading the setup installer last year, it IS possible I guess Ive hit the wrong link when trying yesterday and thats why its showing Mybook but the issues the same as when I run the setup installer from your link its exactly the same.

Clearing my credentials does not work btw, & to be honest I did not think it would as Im seeing the same issue on ALL my PCs with windows 7, windows 8.1 Pro and vista. It`s unlikely the same issue would affect all the machines. Also as a side note,Two of them have local accounts and are not connected to my microsoft account.

edit:- one further note, the windows 7 machine has a virgin install on ( I re-installed it about a week ago). also there are four PCs - three PCs are hard wired - (ethernet), - one is on wifi, the one NOT shown on the router screengrab is a linux machine which is usually switched off and was at the time of the grab (it`s IP address is different again).
