When you setup the WDMC I believe it registers with the WDMyCloud.com (outgoing, so the WDMyCloud.com gets a copy of your public Internet IP address. Then the WDMC sets up Port Forwarding in your router, here’s an example of mine:
192.168.1.5
4324 TCP Any → 5211
All Broadband Devices Active
192.168.1.201
WD2go TCP Any → 80
All Broadband Devices Active
192.168.1.201
WD2goSSL TCP Any → 443
All Broadband Devices Active
These are setting in the firewall of my broadband router. The .5 device is a Slingbox and the .201 is my WDMC.
When you log in remotely, I believe the WD2go.com launches a session request to the Public (Internet) IP of your router, which it discovered when the WDMC registered, and then the router using the Port Forwarding so that incoming connects to ports 80 and and 443 will be routed to your My Cloud to establish the conversation from your remote client device, relayed through WD2go, then to your My Cloud server at your location.
So, if those statements are all true, then I would be looking at your firewall setting in the router. Hopefully you don’t have multiple routers or firewalls between the WDMC and your Internet connection. I have mine set for Medium Security. I’ll bet if I changed it to High, my remote access would fail… BUT I’M NOT GOING TO TEMP FATE! LOL
My remote access works beautifully! I have a 4G mobile device so streaming audio or video is like being at home, unless I’m in a bad coverage area. And, it may help that my Cellular provider is the same company, and network, as my home broadband service. At home I’m using the My Cloud App on iPhone, iPod and iPad, using the ‘Get Code’ option for connecting the My Cloud Apps with the WDMC.
I’ll say this, I’ve knocked a lot of cobwebs out of my memory, learned many new and interesting things about networking, routers, Debian Linux, etc. since I purchased the WDMC… AND I LOVE THE PRODUCT… for now!
