Well, in this post, you’re mixing apples and oranges.
AVI is a CONTAINER. You can put all sorts of video formats in AVI. AVI is not a video encoding type, it is a file type.
H.264 is a CODEC. It is not a file type, it’s a video encodiing type.
The WDTV requires that both the CONTAINER and CODEC be supported in combination. The user manual explains which containers support which codecs.

FWIW, I too have a synology NAS that’s loaded with nothing but MKVs (both DVD and BD quality) that I stream directly via wired GbE to my SMP, and they all play perfectly - at least the ones that I’ve played since picking up this box. Not that that helps you directly, but it seems odd that you’re having such problems.
You might want to post the media infofrom one of your problem MKVs and maybe someone on the forum might spot an issue.

What probably annoys me the most is that the wdtv live hub works fine, i would have thought that the same software would have been nice to have in the SMP. How do i attach the media info
Post the *TEXT* output of Mediainfo, not graphics.

I returned the machine to the retailer and upgraded to the WDTV Live Hub which i know works as i have one already, so disregard all the info i sent in it is now irrelevent, thanks for time
