New Passport Ultra Is Not Backing Up

I just got a new WD Passport Ultra, 1 Terabyte capacity. I installed it on my Windows 10 laptop and then chose the recommended backup plan, even though my Passport will not usually be connected to my computer.

I clicked “Edit Files” and chose all of the library options (music, pictures, documents, etc.).

I then clicked “Select Files.”

After that I clicked “Backup Now” and the “Preparing Backup” notice appears. Then nothing happens. It does not backup anything.

What am I doing wrong? Why isn’t it backing up my libraries? Thank you.

Are you using WD Backup or WD SmartWare?


I suggest you uninstall the program and reinstall the latest version from WD’s website. Then retry the backup.

I did as you instructed and got the same results. It prepares the backup, then nothing. I got the WD Passport Ultra for Christmas, so I think that I’m just going to exchange it for another portable backup external hard drive instead of trying to fix this one that doesn’t work.
