I have a western Digital Live Plus unit that I just bought. I am reading alot of mixed reviews regarding updating the firmware to Version 1.04.10. What am I losing by not doing this? What can I expect to gain by doing this update and is there a chance that my unit could work less effective after this firmware update. Thanks
If it works for you, what you’d gain would mostly be:
- access to USB Keyboards
- a fix for header compression in Matroska files
- DVD menu functionality
- a bunch of new online services
What you will lose, until WD/PlayOn can sort it out, is access to PlayOn.
There’s also a possibility you might have HDMI issues, sound issues, and network issues. Many people have one problem or another, but also many have no issues whatsoever with 1.04.10.
Thanks for the good Information! This still makes me hesitant as the device is working pretty good right now. I am not sure what Firmware version the device shipped with? One of my m2ts files is playing a little choppy and broken up at times, but this is the only real issue I am having. I am also finding it tough to get the surround sound working through an Optical Cable, but I think the issue is with the Receiver and not the device.
Ya, I couldn’t tell you what version it ships with. I know the version in mine was earlier than 1.01.17, but I never really looked at the version number when I first plugged it in.
If yours has never been flashed, you actually have 4 updates lined up and waiting for you (if you go with online updating, that is, instead of downloading to USB – if you download to USB you could just go to 1.04.10 in one hop):
First, it will update to 1.01.17.
Then, it will update to 1.02.21.
Then, it will update to 1.03.49.
Then, it will update to 1.04.10.
You could look up the release notes for the earlier versions and see if there’s one you’d like to step up to. Or, you could just keep what you have if it’s mostly working for you, i.e. don’t fix what ain’t broke.
I know, other than the .mkv issue, most people seemed happy with the performance of 1.02.21, although there were a few minor bugs, and people have requested many changes since then (such as DVD menus).
I am in two minds still as to upgrading the firmware to 1.04.10. I would hope that it would only be a positive to do this upgrade, but by reading some of the forum posts I am not sure. I have two Issues with my WD Media Player: The sound is stuttering on one of my m2ts files. This is only happening on 1 out of 20 of these Blu Ray Files. Could a Firmware update possibly fix this. I tried this same file on my Asus Oplay Air and had no problem playing this file. My second issue is not getting Digital Dolby Digital sound through my Receiver. I think this is an issue with the Surround Sound device and not the media Player.
What about if I do upgrade my Firmware and it turns out to be less stable than my current Firmware. Can I roll back to a previous Firmware. I will be upgrading using USB as I do not have my Internet hooked up to the media Player yet. Where can I find the link for 1.04.10? Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thanks
The link’s broken for now, but you should be able to find updated fw here.
Thanks for the link to the firmware upgrade! I currently have 1.03.49. on my WDMP. I tried to update to 1.04.10, but it wasn’t allowing me to do so. I was not seeing the Icon for firmware upgrade when I was going to system settings. What does it mean to put the 3 files on the top level root of the USB drive. I extracted the three files onto a usb and was expecting to follow the instructions and be all set. Can anyone tell me what my mistake was? I also have one m2ts file that has the sound stuttering. Do you think that is the movie file or the decide that is causing this? All my other m2ts files are working. Thanks for the help.

I believe that you have a Live Plus which is a different firmware than the link to the live firmware above.
You should download the Live Plus update here
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_liveplus
You need the 3 files extracted and put into the top level of the drive - not in a directory / folder. If you have the WDTV connected to the internet you could just allow the unit to download and the upgrade automatically after a confirmation.
