I have a 3TB MyCloud. One that is going to be disabled from the internet soon.
Got the code from WD for 20% off but I can only pick between MyCloud Home and My Book. Well My Book isn’t really a NAS so that’s not what I want. I’m reading on the MyCloud Home and from the reviews, you can’t directly access it from your computer? It HAS to go through the internet and if your internet is down, you don’t get access to any of your files? Is this true? That’s not what I call a NAS if it’s true.
I don’t understand why I can only pick between those two devices. I was wanting to buy something else but the code isn’t going to work for it.
20% discount!!! It seems like a bad joke. I am disappointed by this lack of consideration. There is no question of acquiring a new NAS under these conditions. There are more serious brands.
This is a problem from Western digital, The customer is not responsable of that. If you want to solve the problem, buy a new one !!! Its not serious, really.
If you have specific questions about the My Cloud Home you should ask them in the My Cloud Home subforum if you haven’t already. The My Cloud Home, as many have discovered, is not a direct replacement for a My Cloud. It has a different operating system, relies on being connected to the internet, and has different features and options. In many cases it’s a step down from a My Cloud device.
No one is being forced to use the discount WD is offering. If one shops around they may be able to find a better NAS as a slightly higher price from other manufacturers (Synology, QNAP, etc.) that has better hardware, more features, and more options.
I just thought WD would want my money. But limiting me to two choices to upgrade to with the 20% off coupon isn’t going to do it. I’ll most likely move to Synology instead. The DS118 seems to be what I’m looking for and could be a nice direct replacement to the MyCloud device that I have and even an upgrade.
Just a reminder. The My Cloud that are not supported by the OS5 update will continue to work on the local network just as it does now. It’s just WD is ending the WD supported OS3 remote access (MyCloud.com and OS3 My Cloud mobile app for iOS/Android) and ending future firmware and software support.
Q: Will my device stop working if I can’t upgrade to My Cloud OS 5? Will I lose access to my data?
A: Once the services have been shut down, you will still be able to access the device on a local network. However, access through the My Cloud OS 3 mobile app or web app will not be possible. Email notifications also won’t be delivered. Devices that have auto-update enabled will receive a final firmware update to disable remote access and outbound traffic to cloud services. Then, support will end and you’ll have to use the local network to access the device.
It is recommended by WD (and others) to block Internet/broadband access to the My Cloud at the local network router’s firewall. One will also have to manually set the My Cloud time in the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings if they block broadband access to their My Cloud.
