Mycloud 1. gen - change operating system

my wd mycloud 1.Generation is only reachable as a local drive. So I can still use it at all, I want to make an Ubuntu server of it. Is that possible? If so, how?

Want to make an Ubuntu server out of what? The hard drive or the My Cloud? There are a number of discussions on attempting to run other operating systems (mostly Debain) on the My Cloud.

Use the forum search feature, magnifying glass icon top right, to find other discussions on alternate firmware.

Are you looking to use it as a “local network drive”; or a web accessible network drive?

It will function just fine a local network drive accessible to all computers in your home. Just make sure to block it from the internet at your router. (poor security)

I have read Fox_exe’s instruction and taken the files from https://hackers.cx/wdnas/WDMyCloud-Gen1/. But here is only the firmware “original_v04.01.02-417”, with me I have v04.05.00-327, so the installation breaks. Can I download the correct version somewhere?

I am not sure I understand your question. The files used in the first generation (P/N -00) single bay My Cloud unbrick directions from Fox_Exe are located in that repository:
Original_v03.04.01-230.tar.gz: https://wd.hides.su/fox_exe/WDMyCloud-Gen1/Backups/original_v03.04.01-230.tar.gz
Original_v04.01.02-417.tar.gz: https://wd.hides.su/fox_exe/WDMyCloud-Gen1/Backups/original_v04.01.02-417.tar.gz

After unbricking the first generation single bay My Cloud one can then update (manually from within the Dashboard) to the latest first generation single bay My Cloud firmware.
Firmware Release 04.06.00-111 (4/15/2022): https://downloads.wdc.com/nas/sq-040600-111-20220109.deb

Because WD typically prevents one from downloading the other My Cloud firmware one can see the archived versions for the first generation single bay My Cloud here:

How to upgrade from firmware file using SSH (v4.x)
Connect to My Cloud using SSH.
Change to the Public folder: cd /DataVolume/shares/Public/
Download the firmware file: wget http://download.wdc.com/nas/
Example of one above what you have…
wget http://download.wdc.com/nas/sq-040500-342-20190805.deb

Many thanks for your help. Unfortunately I can’t reply until now because I was ill.
I get the following error message:
DMyCloud:/DataVolume/shares/Public# ./install.sh

OK, let’s go…
Backup images not found. Please download it and place in same folder.

I have all the files in the folder
https://hackers.cx/wdnas/WDMyCloud-Gen1/Backups/
copied. Without success.
What am I doing wrong?

i’m not an expert, but your files are still compressed. In my link, the download has a file extention of .deb(FirmWare file)
Inside yours, are image files used to target sections such as “/dev/sdb4”
So yours are not firmware, i’m not sure what your trying to do.

What are you trying to do? Several of the files are compress and you will likely need to extract/uncompress them before using them. For example: tar xvfz original_v3.04.01-230.tar.gz

If one is trying to unbrick a hard drive with the WD firmware for use in the single bay first gen My Cloud enclosure then see the archived fox_exe directions:
