My passport not recognised as Target By WD Smartware

I have the WD My passport and running Windows 10 version 1703 (creators). I plugged in the passport and straight away Win 10 told me that my drive was ready. No chance to do anything else. Unfortunately when I run the WD Smartware the Passport is not listed as a Target drive. I have downloaded the drivers and tried all sorts of fixes but it still will not show the Passport. Windows has given the drive a letter so it is recognising the drive and WD Backup will allow me to backup to that drive. When the computer boots up the splash screen that comes up says that the device is not connected please connect a device. No matter what I do it still will not see the device. It also tells me that there is an update to the backup software, when I pick update it downloads starts to install and then disappears. Whilst I can backup it would be nice to be able to use the Smartware. Can anybody help please.
