My Passport Fails to Back Up Computer

This is the 2nd WD My Passport I’ve owned. This one is 2TBs. After the 1st backup, I keep getting message saying that the backup failed. When I click on the detail tab, it just asks me to choose the object I want to use to back up the computer(Mac running IOS 11.2.6). I choose it, but the same thing keeps happening.
Both of the WD My Passports i have purchased have done this very same thing. What is the solution?
