My Cloud EX4 MP4

I’ve jut upgraded from a Netgear Stora using 2x 2TB drives mirrored to the My Cloud EX4 with 3x 3TB WD drives set as RAID10 as I was running out of space. The main uses for the NAS drive is access data remotely when carrying out PC repairs via my user profile and streaming videos in MP4 format - TV programs or movies (nothing to do with HTC or Apple etc) or listening to music.

Well, on the home network using various DLNA devices I get “This file format is not supported” leaving me with the option of converting just over 1.4TB of files to AVI. I have the latest firmware.

I’m sorry if this has already been posted but most of these issues relate to last year and I would have thought this would have been resolved by now.

I can’t claim very much experience yet but I put an mp4 movie onto my ‘mycloud’ and had a friend attempt to access it via his fibre-optic wi-fi. Downloading the file to his ‘Windows’ Computer would have taken  a long time so we gave up on that. However, streaming it to his computer (playing on ‘vlc’) worked. Unfortunately, perhaps because of the access speed it pixellated and was unwatchable - but it did play.

A laptop connected to my home router, being the same as that connected to my ‘mycloud’ had a very fast connection speed. In this instance(mp4) films could be downloaded and/or streamed without any apparent problems. The same goes for tablets (with appropriate players installed).

I know some TV’s (presumably being DLNA devices) will not play mp4 movies. This perhaps, is what you are getting at. I agree, it may be that conversion to ‘avi’ will be your only option. Other posters may think otherwise.

HI, I’ve given up on converting that amount of data from MP4 to AVI as it’s not practical. The EX4 seems to be choosey as it will play some MP4 and not others. The new Humax PVR does not like the MP4 via the EX4 so I have a copy of the data on a USB device. At the moment I am 50/50 about sending the EX4 back or selling it as a mistake. I’ve used WD for years in term sof HDD’s and they have been fine. I’ve emailed the moderators so pending their answer or another solution. Many thanks. By the way this issue is on the internal 1Gb network using 5 DNLA devices. I’ve not tried streamin externally yet…
