My cloud does not show in windows explorer

Hi,

I have just bought the wd my cloud and installed it on a netgear router and am using two windows 8 computers.

I used one computer to install the WD and everything worked fine including being able to see it in windows explorer.

But my main laptop, the one I want to set up shareware on, does not see the drive in windows explorer.

it can access it through the windows app and through the browser.  It sees it under media and storage.

I tried installing wd discovery and it said path not found (I chose auto map).

I tried re-installing the drive with this main laptop.  I ran the installation but it didn’t really re-install it.  It just said it was all working fine and had  me log in but obviously did not reinstall.

I have turned the router off (unplugged) for a half a minute and turned back on.  Did the same to the WD.

I have updated my windows and double checked all of the network settings to be sure the computers exactly match.

I have made sure my home network is set to private and sharing is on.

I have made sure network discovery is on.

I need to be able to auto backup this main computer, not the one that it is showing on.

I tried to use the file history in windows 8 but it could not find the drive, either.

edited to add - I have also upgraded the WD to the newest firmware and set it for a static IP

again, though, the drive is accessible through the wd app and browser, but I do not want to use those and need to be able to set up auto back up on this main laptop.

Am i going to have to wipe the drive of all files I already have on it and some set it back to factory settings to be able to install it again?

Thank you for any help (I have read all of the recent threads on this issue and tried all of their solutions to no avail).

do you have file and printer sharing enabled?

have you tried \ipaddress in Windows explorer?

yes and yes

I have also just now completed a power off reset (nothing) and then tried a post here where he said to checks services.msc and have set the ones he listed to automatic and rebooted (nothing)

a note on the ip address - when I try that, it goes straight to the browser dashboard window.

if I put it in search, it returns nothing

as noted at first, it does show up under media devices and storage

where are you trying the IP? it should be in file explorer, not internet explorer. and in the format \x.x.x.x then press enter

since media works it has a network connection but accessing a share is very differnet

can you share a folder on your desktop and access it in file explorer on your notebook?

you mean share a file or folder on one laptop and see it on the other (NOT a folder on the NAS?)

then yes.  that is how I have been sharing files between laptops before.  this nas was supposed to replace that.

just finished the factory reset through wdmycloud and it didn’t work either.

I think I forgot to mention that I installed quickview and it can see the shares but when I try to map to one of them I get a windows message unable to blah blah

Are all your computers in the same workgroup? See image below. Check to make sure the computer you can’t see it on has the same workgroup name as the My Cloud.

yes (I checked that first thing.  I should ahve put that in the list of things I have done in my first post)

an update (or something new I discovered at least)

If I go to WD quickview and map, I get an error message as stated above

but if I choose create shortcut, it will put a shortcut on the desktop.

If I click that shortcut, it will open in windows explorer and I can then access as normal the files within that shares shortcut

it also adds on the left pane a new item under network WDMyCloud.

HOWEVER, if I then try to click on that new item under network, it gives me the error message the specifiied network provider message is invalid.

Why will it let me access through quick view and the windows app, plus make the shortcuts I can access but not through windows explorer?  any ideas?

another update - the files I share are layered photoshop files (large) and though it shows those in the shortcut made on the desktop, it will not actually open them.  I can open pdf but not pics.

this is so wierd and frustrating as this system was to replace sharing pics between computers in my office.  Right now, I can share either by copying to jumpdisk and carrying or leaving computers on to access hard drives but I really wanted our own server to share files.

I do use an online cloud also and wanted to eliminate that if possible

another update

if I go to wd2go then it does sign in and see the drive through the browser but if I click on a share, it gives the error

The network name cannot be found

oops, also the ipad app apparently works as normal.  haven’t tried on my iphone yet

this sounds very strange, please correct me if my summary is wrong.

using quickview you can creak a link and open the share in file explorer

in file explorer you can open PDF files but not photoshop PSD files

have you tried opening JPG files in photoshop?

have you tried opening any other type of files from the share?

have you tried copying the PSD file to a local drive in explorer, then opening in photoshop?

I have installed two My Clouds on my system (Windows 8.1).  Everything on one of them, I’ll call that MyCloud 1, works perfectly.  The other, MyCloud2, does not.

They are set up basically the same.  I can open both dashboards.  I see both of them in desktop app.  Two days ago, I could see both of them and all the shares in File Explorer.  Today, I cannot see any of the shares of MyCloud 2 in File Explorer.  That’s my problem.

I’ve tried everything suggested in this thread, but nothing works.   Unplug, reset, same workgroup, file sharing enabled.  All that stuff.

Odd thing is, I just now created a new share, and that one popped up in File Explorer.  However, I still cannot see the other, older, shares.

Any suggestions?
