Media Server (Twonky 7.2.8) used for music streaming towards windows media player 12

I’m struggling since I purchased the WD MC (3TB) to get the media server running correctly. The faulty behaviour is as follows:

  1. As long as there are not more than 450-500 files within the index everything is fine and the windows media player (WMP12 on Win7 64bit) shows the external media server and the correct and complete content

  2. After adding another 100 files to the NAS the complete content in the WMP12 gets erased and the index starts to rebuild - unfortunately the data transfer from the twonky server stops after the first 200 files and the index within the WMP12 remains uncomplete - whereas the twonky server still shows the correct number of files.

  3. Removal of the last 100 files or alternatively from the first 400 files reinitiates the rebuild of the WMP index in the above described manner, but now the index gets completed.

I observed this behaviuor with three different Win7 installations and one additionial Win8 installation - some faulty windows configuration therefore seems to be unlikely for me.  Does anybody have the same kind of problem or does have an idea for a solution - I’m running out of ideas how to overcome the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Shall the silence tell me that only I have the problem and nobody else or is it the case that everybody knows about this malfunction and doesn’t care anymore since there are other and better solutions ;-). A short notice would clarify for me the situation a lot.

Thanks

Hello,

What firmware version does it have installed?

Have you tried using another client instead of using Windows media player.

Very little of my music shows up under My Cloud in the Windows Media Player. The small amount that is there is completely messed up.

Because I have the same music on my desktop I have never worried about it.

The following may not give the answer to or solve what you are asking. Over night I tried several things and the following images will show what I was able to do. When you try the following you may be asked to choose a default player (See image at bottom of post). I chose Windows Media Player to show what could be done using it.

First I opened up my Network and chose My Cloud then the shared music in my Horace  music folder. See image below. With this I clicked on the first song and then holding down the shift key I clicked on the last song and then play. This plays all the songs.

I also created a couple of Playlist, you will see how this works later. See image below.  Be sure to name and save your playlist.

The image below shows the same thing I did in the first image only this is shared music in my Public share.

The image below shows the music playing in Windows Media Player and you can also save it.

This final image shows how you can open up Windows Media Player and click on WDMYCLOUD, then Playlist and all your Playlist that you have created will open up and you can choose which one to play.

I hope this helps some and as you use the Windows Media Player you may find more ways of playing or streaming your music.

I have Windows 7 SP1 on my computer.

Seems like they are making some improvements. More of my Albums are showing up and have the correct songs showing in the correct order.

As you can see in the above image it is showing 235 Albums, 533 songs and 30 hrs of play time. I know this is not everything I have but at least it is showing a lot more than it was.

Here are a couple of images I captured that should show the problem. While I don’t play my music this way it does seem like it should work correctly.

Here is the first image captured a couple of hours back. This was used in one of my prior post.

Here is the current image taken just a few minutes ago. This shows a big difference.

Maybe this is why my My Cloud never goes into HDD Standby Mode. It is too busy rebuilding my music in Twonky over and over.

I believe I have the identical problem.

MyCloud 2TB firmware v04.00.00-607, Twonky v7.2.8

So I have 2 laptops, each with Win7 and WMP12 running. They both suffer the same problem, i.e. only the first 4 or 5 artists appearing in the WMP list for the MyCloud in Other Libraries.

All my other devices work fine (SonyTV, WDTV Live, PS3, Andoird devices and iPad). They can all see the entire music library from the Twonky Media Server.  I can also see all the music files through windows explorer by naviagating to the folder on the MyCloud from both laptops.  So it seems to me to be some sort of clash between Twonly and WMP. I’m not sure, but I beleive that this problem did not exist on the older firmware (I updated to the new firmware on day 3 of owning the MyCloud).

I’ve tried right click - refresh on the MyCloud library in WMP many, many times.

I thought I was on to something when fiddling with Twonky Server settings (mycloudIPaddress:9000). Under Sharing - Media Receivers I hit refresh list. This seemed to give me a few more artists temporarily, before then reducing back to just the 1st artist…

I think someone else has posted a similar problem on this forum here -

Very keen to know if anyone can help? I will keep fiddling and will post back here if I come up with anything.

Thank you to everybody who was responding to my initial question at the beginning of this thread. I was obviously too naive in order to believe that it simply couldn’t be that a product regardless of such a fundamental malfunction is nevertheless released to the human race. After countless hours of listening and investigating protocol logs using Microsoft Network Monitor in order to identify who/what is resonsible for this incomplete transmission of the index content I still doubted on my self regarding what I saw there. Therefore I wanted to have the confirmation from other users about the experienced problems still assuming that all this is simply my fault. Performing further tests lateron which included the option for the ITUNES server in the MEDIA server menu I learned which amazing mess occured additionally in the information exchange in this simple server-client system which made me once again even more clear about the obvious fact:

What I have in front of me is simply an untested and incompletely developed piece of hardware which doesn’t give you value for money, and is not good for anything beside wasting user’s time.

To be clear: We are talking here not about data access via volume shares ( as it was mentioned in some cases above - this mode might work, but this is regarding the user access rights [i.e. folder vs. data file based access] something fundamentally different compared to a server-client information exchange). The functionality and compatibility with Windows Media Player12 we are talking about is clearly adveritsed in the user’s manual of WDMC, it was one of the reasons for me to buy this product somewhen in May 2014. After several iterations with the customer service from WD finally the malfunction is confirmed - beside nebulous points about restrictions due to supposed WMP´s incompatibilities to the DLNA standard. There is really no good reason tu further waste valueable life time and to play the role of a Beta-tester for WD´s software development department. As long as they get such replies only from a few and singular points around the globe nothing will change - what perhaps would be needed is to slap in numbers this half developed equipment back on to the desks of the right people at WD, less to all the “little” software developers - perhaps more to all the big managers and “decision makers”.

What makes me really angry is the big amount of hours I have invested in order to track down what is causing the problem - with the only result that the customer service has handed over now the problem to their main department, and now once again nothing else than silence, and week after week is elapsing  - which amount of arrogance is needed in order to believe that customers can be treated like this. There is only one thing certain - WD is razed from my future considerations, what a great pity.

Good luck for everybody.
